Hi,

I'm looking to get two young piggies, i thought maybe two boys (neutered), but would they get on ok?

should look to get a boy & girl instead, or both girls?

thanks.

If you're going to go for two boys, they don't need to be neutered. It doesn't affect their behaviour like it can with a dog or cat, just stops them being able to have babies ;) I'd stick with a single sex pair - both sexes can live happily in pairs.

Girls can also live happily in larger groups (I have five girls with a neutered boy) whereas boys are best kept in twos.

Whatever you choose, enjoy your piggles :)

Thanks, trying to get these decisions knocked out one by one.

Finally decided on the cage (essegi 120, two tier), now need to decide on the piggies, next its the bedding.

My evenings have all disappeared ;)

Please get a bigger cage. That is just the minimum space. How about the ferplast 140? I had that before I made a c and c cage.

I didnt realise it was a particularly small cage to be honest.

looking at whats out there it seemed to be a fairly big size, unless you want to go c&c and start farming pigs or start building a house extension to fit a bigger house for them in!

as previously mentioned I wouldn't neuter a boar to live with another boar, its an unnecessary procedure. I started with two sows and boars tend to need more space than sows so if you have the minimum recommended cage size (RSPCA sizes) then maybe two sows would be easier and you would have less worries about them falling out.

Also if you are after younger piggies then when boars hit the hormones they MAY fall out. All this is just what can happen but of course piggies are never text book cases lol

A 120 cage is perfectly fine for two piggies. However males get along better with a bigger space. You could make a C&C cage to fit the exact space that you have *so no wasted bits round the edges,* It is also alot cheaper than a shop bought cage. :) Definatly worth considering.

I think its definatly worth getting a same sex pair as they can be just as bonded, without the dangerous opperation (having piggies neutered is a little trickier than rabbits and cats. Also, you would have to have it done by an exotics vet as these are the only vets trained with guinea pigs, (i know, theyre classed as exotic?!))

Maybe one for an upgrade in the future, we've the added complication of two cats so didnt fancy starting off with the unnecessary challenge of building a cage sturdy enough to keep out two fairly large cats.

good point about the op, will probably stick with the original plan of two males and leave them as nature intended, oh how close they came if only they knew :x
