Hello,

Bought two new males yesterday at around 10 weeks old. However I haven't heard them squeak yet and they don't lick our finger like the other two guinea pigs of mine do.

What is causing this?

Thanks.

Hey, give them time to settle!

Not all piggies will lick your fingers and will do so only when they trust you. Many piggies have not been handled before and are petrified in their new surroundings.

Here are tips on how to settle shy new guinea pigs; there are more helpful and informative threads in our reference section.

"f you have a two-level hutch, let them have the full extent of it, before they have established a base in their new home. They will be only frightened or confused otherwise!"

What do you mean?

Let them NOT have the use of it all straight away - guinea pigs prefer to establish a new base and then slowly explore their new surroundings from there.

It is mainly for people with big hutches/attached run.

I'm lost..

"or if you have a two-level hutch, let them have the full extent of it, before they have established a base in their new home."

but you also say, do not let them explore the whole base as they will become confused and frightened :O

I'm confused now :P

I think what Wiebke means is, is if you have a 2 level hutch, put the piggies in the top OR bottom level first leaving the other level shut off. that way, the piggies can get used to the space around them first. When the piggies feel a little more confident, open up the second level and let them explore further. If you were to put your pigs in to a large run at this stage, you would probably find that they'd be so scared, they'd just hide somewhere :)

I think if you read it in a certain way it sounds confusing.

"Don't put your piggies out in the run immediately; or if you have a two-level hutch, let them have the full extent of it"

So basically, no, don't let them have full access of a large hutch, it will be intimidating to them, and they may not use it all to begin with anyway.
