I’ve had my two male guinea pigs for about a month when I got them they were both 8 weeks old and shared a cage. Yesterday evening they began chattering their teeth at each other and tonight they have carried on but been fine with eachother all day. They both have the same amount of time with me and my partner and have floor time every day for roughly an hour. Does anyone know what I can do to help them.
Hello and welcome. The first question is how much space do they have? 5x2 feet is the minimum recommended for boars. They also need two of everything so that sharing is optional. We tend to recommend scatter feeding but if you do want to use bowls make sure they are at least a body length apart.
Your boys are starting puberty, I would advise you read the guides on guinea pig info. My tech skills don't exist or I would link them for you.
You will be hearing a lot of rumbling from now on. When my Sir George was younger he was a prolific rumblestrutter.
Their hormones are rising now and this can be a testing time for their bond.
If they are properly character matched and want to be together then this kind of dominance is normal and won’t amount to anything of concern. Dominance is a normal part of maintaining their hierarchy.
If things are within mild realms, then you don’t do anything - they have to just get on with it.
Chattering can be mild which is fine or a more intense nature which is a warning.
I’ve added the dominance behaviours guide below which shows a scale of when things change from normal to of concern
It’s important with boars that they have a lot of space : 180x60cm (6ft x 2ft) or a 5x2 c&c Cage is needed.
There needs to be multiple of all resources in the cage, hides need to have two exits as you don’t went any pig to be able to trap the other inside a hide.
I’ll add some guides below which explain everything further

With an average life span of only around 3 years and a hostile environment, wild guinea pig social life is much more fluid and eventful, whether that is losses, births, regular leadership changes, new boars being accepted or changes to the territory due to climate extremes, infectious illnesses, predation and the waxing and waning of group fortunes and the amount of territory they can claim around their denning areas.
