Poor little Trudy had a massive grass seed from the hay wedged right into her eye when we put the piggies into the run today šŸ˜

I managed to pull it out with a LOT of squeaking from Trudy. We still had some Isathal from Hazelnut's poorly eye in the summer so I bathed the eye and popped a bit in. I hope that was a sensible thing to do!? I'll be phoning the vet first thing tomorrow. It must have been so painful and I'm sure is still feeling really sore. Poor little piggy ā˜¹ļø So sad when their beloved hay betrays them!

Do you have any ViscoTears @Sparklepetal? It's artificial tears available from Boots for around a fiver. The vets may recommend something called Lubrithal which does the same job as ViscoTears but they cost 3 times as much. ViscoTears helps keep the eye lubricated and aids healing when used in conjunction with Isathal. You need to leave a good half an hour to an hour between putting one lot of drops in and then the other to allow for the drops to be soaked into the eye properly. Meg had a very nasty haypoke earlier in the year and she had 3 lots of eye drops 3 times a day for around 9 weeks before it healed up. I wasn't Mrs Popular!

Thank you for the tip. Maybe that's something I should have in the just-in-case drawer for next time, whatever needs to happen this time round. Trudy doesn't mind medication too much as long as my daughter is cuddling her, but I have to do it single-handed when I go out with the night snugglesafes in a minute which might be a different story!

We have an appointment at 10.40 so hopefully the expert check up will get Trudy on the right track.

She's opening her eye better this morning but I think it looks like there is some ulceration. Poor little mite.

Thank you for asking, been all go here today with plumbers and things so I've not had a chance to update!

We saw a nice vet called Rebecca. She says to carry on with the Isathal and has also given us some antibiotic drops. There is some ulceration in the area where the seed was lodged. Trudy has a follow-up appointment on Thursday to check that things are going in the right direction.

Both piggies are so subdued after a visit to the vet. I can't ever decide if they just don't like the carrier, or whether the car journey is upsetting, or whether they remember where they are going! We do have quite a long drive to our preferred vet practice. Back in their run now with hand-picked grass (the plumber thought I had gone round the bend when he caught me harvesting!) and freshly heated snugglesafes in their hideys, so they should soon perk up again.

Hopefully your prompt action and vet trip means that the eye will heal quickly.
Mine are always quieter after a vet trip.
I donā€™t think they like being out of their comfort zone.
Food usually restores their good humour

A little update on Trudy's eye: when she returned to the vet for a check 3 days later they said it was not healing sufficiently well and added a second kind of eye drops. (So she's on Exocin and Acular) After another 3 days the vet found the ulcer is only "pin prick sized" so should be fine after continuing with the drops for a week.

What a relief! Trudy has such beautiful big black eyes, with black "eyeliner" making them look even bigger. I'd hate for her to have ongoing problems. Just mind yourself in the hay from now on Tru!
