Has anyone used this?

Beans was to be put on Tramadol drops for her arthritis but the vet (not my normal piggy vet) said these aren't in production anymore, so he would order transdermal tramadol gel...

It would be rubbed on her ears, downside being it can sometimes cause dermatitis.

Any thoughts on this?

Sorry - no idea. Poppy recently had Tramadol after surgery - just liquid in syringe. Any reason why Beans can't have liquid form?

Bumble used to have the tablets which i crushed with the back of a spoon and mixed in with his metacam and syringed it.

Tramodol comes in tablet form & is crushed & mixed with syrup as far as I am aware. Why does it have to be applied to her ears? You can't dose accurately that way :( I have a bottle of Tramodol still, I'll check the proportions x

Trandermal Gels For Cats - How To Administer Guide

This was probably the most appropriate thing I could find. I'd say the vet says the ears because they have little hair there, and apparently the gel gets dosed via syringe. Of course, that's for cats, but I would think it would be a similar situation for Beans.

I don't have any direct knowledge though. I've only ever had dogs on tramadol before.

I'm not keen on it being put on her ears... Toast licks her ears so I'd be worried she'd ingest it? I don't know why the liquid form wasn't mentioned it seems like the easiest way to do it..

Vets usually have to charge a fee for making meds up like this; maybe it was a cost thing as the gel is ready to dispense?

He said they'd need to order the gel in. I'm assuming Tramodol drops are the tablets? I'm just confused as to why I wasn't offered liquid.. seems like the easiest option?

It does, I would ring them & ask about the drops, if they are stopping doing them then the vet can use tablets & make up the solution themselves, they just need a pestle & mortar! I've watched my vet do that lots of times with medication for mine x

Fudge has been on the tramadol drops for a while - I'm gutted they've stopped making them. She's now on just the tablets that I crush in a pill crusher and mix with water. It's a pain in the bum but she needs it X

If they no longer make the drops, the vet might be thinking it's easier than trying to feed a guinea pig a tablet. However, you could crush a tablet and mix it with water and syringe in that way. Maybe the vet didn't think of it. I would give them a call and ask them.

It's surprising how quick you get used to cutting up tablets. I'm unbelievably clumsy but I'm pretty good at chopping a little tablet into 8 pieces now.

The vet can also chop them for you, i sometimes got them already quartered.

I also bought a pill cutter - very cheap and very efficient way to cut and store pills. But my vets will also split pills if you don't have a pill cutter.

4 out of 6 of Fudges meds are pills.. I try and not split unless she's on a tiny amount of it I.e the tramadol tablets as you do lose more of the tablet the more you split it.

She's on 1/4 tab Fortekor every 8 hours. I crush the whole tablet in the pill crusher and add 0.95ml water to make 1 tablet in 1ml. I then shake thoroughly before giving and give her 0.25ml every 8 hours which is 1/4 tab. Means none of the tablet has crumbled and been lost and I know she's getting all of it.

What dose of tramadol is your wee one on?

Fudges drops used to be £12 for 10ml.
This is the first time we've had the tablets and it's Zydol 50mg soluble tablets (just a brand name; still tramadol)

I can't remember exactly how much it was but i was under £10 for 4 tablets for sure. Fudge is at £128 a month for her meds and tbh, Iv started avoiding looking at the price of things!
