Sorry if this is a stupid question but would towels be alright as a substitute for fleeces?

No. Towels get saturated with urine. Fleece is used with towels as the urine wicks away and goes to the towels. Towels on their own would give urine scald.

My piggies have newspaper topped with towel topped with fleece . The fleece ( and piggies )stays dry as the urine drains through to the towel and paper .as piggy fan says ,it's the nature of the fleece which draws moisture away to the other layers .Also means you don' t have to wash every day as you would with just towels , just pick off the droppings . Have found this system to work much better than traditional shavings and far less smelly .

... as above + I was not advised not to use towels as a top layer as a Guinea Pig's claw could get stuck in one of the loops. I had bought a load of towels so I now use them as the absorbent layer and have fleece on top to wick moisture away.

Agree with the other replies. Fleece wicks through so top stays dry whereas towels get wet and stay wet. Some people use towels under the fleece. However you decide to do it, though, be warned that the fleeces will need washing every 3 days.

Know what you mean there . Personally - I prefer washing fleeces to scooping up pet bedding.

i have incontinence pads then main fleece. have towels and fleece where they tend to pee. Mine are just about litter trained so main fleece only needs washed once a week and just change towel and fleece bits when wet. I have large c&c cages so bedding not an option.Fleece and towels i just take them out, shake them and put them in the wash bag then machine

Thanks guys :) Found my tinkerbell fleece blanket so they have that now, and I just ordered 5 more from ebay. I put newspaper underneath the fleece. The princesses are very happy <3

the newspaper wont be very absorbent. Would be better with newspaper then towels then fleece as there needs to be something to soak up the urine and paper will get saturated very quickly.I use the pads to soak up urine and contain the smell but still have towel and fleece where they pee sometimes.
