I normally use newspaper and hay or woodshavings. I moved in with my mum a couple of days ago and while I was at work, the pigs spilt water everywhere and flooded the cage. So my mum took the newspaper out and put a layer of 3 bath towels down. They seem to like it so much, I was thinking of keeping it that way. I notice though that bath towels are listed as a bad/dangerous bedding on some sites, why is that?

i dont know about them being dangerous - however, unlike fleece/vetbed the top layer of the towels would be consistently wet and so you would need some sort of layer on top (fleece/vetbed) you wouldn't want your piggies to be walking over a wet floor all the time :{

I use bath towels underneath a layer of fleece in many areas f my cages. Fleece, once pre-washed and free of softeners wicks away any wee so the surface is much drier and more comfy to sit on. Otherwise, piggies will sit on a wet surface, which can cause foot or urinary infections in the long run.

You can get acrylic or polyester bed throws or baby blankets cheaply in big supermarkets or places like primark. Please look up the tips about what to do with fleece at the top of this section because if the surface is still sealed with softener or washed in an overfilled drum, it won't work.

Ok, I will try fleece on top of the towels and see how it goes.

Some people believe that towels only can be dangerous in case piggy gets their nails caught in the small threaded hoops and if they chew the cotton but used underneath fleece, using towels is a good bedding :)

I used some cheap primark fleeces and they seem to like it more than any other bedding. Lots of jumping about and snuggling down in it. I would have tried fleece sooner but I didn't have a washing machine before.

That's actually my dressing gown that has somehow made it into their cage. They're both sitting on it and looking at me as if to say no chance of getting this back! Spoilt pigs. :))
