Hi everyone! (Long post)
Please move if I put it in the wrong section

I’m new to joining the forum, this being my first post, but I have been a reader for quite a while and have learnt so much.

Last week, I took my two 5 month old girls to the vet as I suspected early signs of possibly a URI. One of them, Tilly, started with a runny nose on and off for about 3/4 days last week and a little sneezing, so I booked in with my vet. Just my luck that when I took them both in last Friday, her nose was clear. The vet checked her breathing, sounded clear, Luna too, and also checked their guts, they were sounding good too.

I’ve been weighing weekly, and for the last two weeks, they both stayed the same/lost approx 3g each, I was thinking it was all related, so I let the vet know and typical again, when she weighed them they put weight on! (I swear they’re doing it on purpose to make me look silly at the vets)

The vet prescribed some cat metacam just in case Tilly’s sneezing was from any dust in the hay causing inflammation in her nostrils (I order from haybox) so she’s on that, 0.24ml for a week.

It has only been 3 days, but her sneezing still seems to be continuing/ getting worse. My dad was watching them and asked me what noise Tilly was making, I figured she was probably teeth chattering at him or something, so I sat and watched her for a few minutes and it was a sneeze and then another two followed in about 20 mins. Her nose doesn’t have any discharge right now and I can’t hear her breathing, she’s eating and pooping as normal, pretty much business as usual (Is it weird that I can differentiate between my Guinea pigs poo?😂)

My vet obviously didn’t want to put her on antibiotics without being sure of the URI, so said to ring back if she gets a lot worse, but I’m not sure if this is bad enough to go back? I stress over them a lot and wonder if I’m doing enough. They definitely seem happy enough, I feel like I’m analysing their behaviour too closely, like I’m waiting for something to be wrong.

Basically my question is, do I carry on with the metacam and try and get them back into the vets next week if she’s still sneezing or take them this week if I can, even though it will probably be like last Friday’s appointment when she couldn’t see anything wrong? Could be something other than a URI?

I don’t want any possible URI to progress, but also don’t want to waste another appointment with the vet, especially with the current situation with covid. (My vet is a recommended one on here and by my local rescue)

I also want to say, they’re on fleece and things are washed in non-bio and they have hay trays. I’m thinking of investing in a good air purifier in the new year too incase it is excess dust.

Thank you for any help x

Welcome to the forum.
I’m not a health expert but one will be along to help.
I just wanted to offer support for you.
It’s always a worry when a piggy is sick.

Welcome to the forum 😊
I’m no health expert either but I’m sure someone will be along soon to give you some help. I hope you find out what the problem is, but if you are very worried then best to call the vets x

I am deffinitley not a health expert but if the sneezing isn’t improving I would always say to get back to the vets. My girl scared me with URI symptoms last month, runny eyes and nose, took her straight in and turned out she had a nasty eye ulcer which was causing the one nostril to be so runny! I’ve had another piggie treated for a lower respiratory infection and the only symptoms she showed was honking which was like a grunting noise. And we only diagnosed this through conscious x rays but antibiotics cleared that up. I hope your little one feels better soon. x

Hi and welcome

Please see whether a bowl of steaming water next to the cage will help to ease the symptoms; if yes, think about humidifying; the bowl trick is a good tester that doesn't cost you anything. The colder weather in the UK lately is making for drier indoors air, which can contribute.

The sneezing is not so bad that it requires treatment but if it persists, then you may want to see your vet again.

Thankyou all for your reassurance, I’ll definitely try the steaming bowl idea to see if it helps first X

Hi again,
I took Tilly back to the vets and she was put on Septrin 0.3ml twice a day. She's been on that since last Friday. The vet thinks she's got something stuck in her nose rather than a URI, but just treated for it in case. (She still sounds good everywhere else but there's a clicking in her nose.)

This morning though, after giving her the antibiotics, she seems to be presenting with ear infection symptoms? She was all good last night, but this morning she is itching her right ear, shaking her head and has a slight head tilt on and off. She won't really let me touch it and normally she's very cooperative and doesn't care about being man handled for checks. Could the Septrin have caused it? Are there side effects? I think I read on someone else's thread quickly this morning that is it now outdated, but didn't have time to look further into why/other options.

I'm thinking it's another trip to the vets, but could anyone point me in the direction of what antibiotics/treatments I should ask for? Id just rather try and get as much as I can out of one visit as it must be stressful for them to keep going back and forth each week.

I know ear infections can be quite bad so want to get on top of it asap if it is.

Thankyou again x

I’m sorry I can’t offer any advice, only to see The vet again. sending healing vibes to poor Tilly, hope she’s feeling better soon x
