I have just found a tiny scab on Elizabeth’s back. I’ve checked her over and her skin is healthy and there’s only the one scab.

Could she have caught herself when scratching herself or could it be something more? Should I just keep an eye on her or does it warrant a vet visit?

Not sure what it could be, but we had something similar with our Chippy. She had a bit of mysterious hair loss on her back (near her bum). Had her checked by the vet just in case. They tested for ringworm and thankfully it was negative. Her fur grew back, she had no further similar issues, and we still don't know what caused it. I'm guessing she barbered herself or maybe her fur got caught on something. I'm glad we had her vet checked though - just in case. Fingers crossed it's nothing serious with your piggy.

Hi!

Please take a deep breath; it is most likely nothing. Piggies can occasionally have a tiny scab that just comes off when it is ready to come off without it going any further.

You only need to see a vet if there is a growing bald area around the scab by next week, so please don't go and check every hour just because you are jittery. I would be personally very astonished if that was the case!

Maybe she has just scratched herself with a sharp toenail while grooming, especially as with the heat my piggies are shedding everywhere even the short haired ones! Yesterday I was also paranoid that Piggle had mites because she made a little v-shape in her back fur while grooming but an hour and a very worried inspection later there was nothing to see at all, she'd just parted her fur and it smoothed over again, false alarm :)
Its great you are so diligent Claire but try not to worry, your piggies dont have contact with any others do they so they are probably all fine x

Hey claire, don't worry, if it is something, itl be minor, and if it is that minor thing, you'll get it sorted anyway. You always do. Relax 👍

I wouldn’t worry about it, either, Claire. I would check it again in a few days and most likely it will be gone.
