Does anyone know why my hay suddenly smells a lot more pungent? It has gotten pretty humid here and my hay is stored in a plastic bag in a cardboard box. I know hay should have ventilation but idk how to give it ventilation while not giving any bugs access to it since it lives in my garage. I assume the smell is just from the seasons changing and it now being hot and humid in my garage. I see no visible change and see no signs of mold, although I don’t know what mold smells like. The pigs are still eating it and it still seems fine but I also realized I don‘t know what a normal hay smell is since it is more pungent then it usually is but this could just be normal.

Timothy hay has a sweet ice tea smell. If hay is not fully dried or it is humid, the hay could mold.

If it doesn’t smell sweet anymore then it may not be fresh.
I would not store it in plastic bags if it is humid. It puts it’s at risk of mold.
Tip it out of the bag and keep it just in the box
