I have had my 2 boys (Winston and Albert) for just under a year, and they are still very jumpy and hide all the time...am I doing something wrong? I want them to want to see me! Its a bit upsetting at times when they run away from you! rolleyes

Guinea pigs always run it's in there nature they are prey animals afterall. Mine will come near me but run at the sign of my hand unless they know I just want to pat them in which case they may consider cooperating but even then it's not guaranteed if I have food they will come over to get it!

Some piggies are just naturally shy, how are you interacting with them and how often?

Everynight I get them out and they sit with me, I let them out the c&c so they can run around on my bed and the floor, I talk to them every morning when I'm getting ready for work and when I come home, and my mum talks to them when she gives them veggies in the day.

Winston does sort of get all comfy when he sits with me and falls asleep a little he also licks my face too....

I am always chatting away to them as they are in my room with me, and i spend all my time in here, i think they take after their mum in being anti social :p

It can be very hard to deal with shy piggies sometimes as you feel very rejected. However, this will definitely improve with age. Being skittish is just part of being young!

Albert is the worst! Winston is sat on my shoulder right now as I type licking my face....I guess I need to give them more time!

They have started to wheek a little when they get their veggies which is nice!

Try feeding them veggies daily from your hand I have 2 extremely outgoing piggies and one... who is just terribly shy and spends alot of time hiding everyday they get there veggies twice daily and all 3 have to come up and take the veggie from my hand! They all do this now the girls practically want to jump in the food bowl and are up on there hind legs like miniature dogs but my male... is so shy and takes a good 20 seconds to pluck up the courage but with patience and the help of two crazy piggies he is getting there!

Try patting them when they are in there cage too don't always pick them up but I do find food is the way to there hearts!

as before Winston will eat out my hands no problem, Albert takes some persuading! I guess he is just a very shy little piggy!

By the way Albert is the black and ginger piggy and Winston is the white and brown piggy in my photo!

It has taken my Llewelyn ages to come round - even with the help of his well adjusted girl friend...

Be patient and persistent. Give them little treats or toys to play with in the run. Praise them like dogs for every little bit they do right - piggies like that quite a bit!

Well I think I made some piggy progress tonight, I was hand feeding both of the piggys, they were out of the cage though, Albert was sat in my arms stuffing his face and making a strange quite wheeking sound, he didnt sound scared so not sure about that, and Winston sat on my chair eating out of my hands, they both also let me stroke them whilst eating! Feeling a little more loved today!

They are running around their cage at the moment as I have cleaned it and put some treats in there! :))

Trust is not an easy thing to give for a prey animal when its instincts are screaming "big smelly predator" - but once you have got it, you will have it forever!

Treasure and savour every little success on the way - even Winston will come out of his shell eventually, but it will be in slow degrees and not in huge jumps.

they'll come round it is all a matter of time
enjoy every min with your boys spoil them with their fav veg always a winner :)p xx
