Hey so a while ago I posted on here about our guinea pigs fighting and then one got bitten. So tigger my pig got an abscesses through it and has had a operation to remove the lump and is recovering……

Yeasterday I went to the vets and the vet said that it needs to heal from the inside to outside. I Woll add a picture so you can see his wound. He’s on antibiotics for it and she said that it needs to stay open so we can queeze thr puss out. I was working witg someone and they said about manuka honey. What is everyone opinion on this?

I am sorry your boy had an abscess, but it is great it has been treated by a vet.
Your vet is 100% correct about keeping the wound open and allowing it to heal from the inside out.

Were you provided with any advice on how often to flush the wound out and what to use?
Did your vet give you things to do this with?
Whilst they are healing abscesses need flushing daily with an antiseptic/cleaning solution to help the healing process and prevent a build up of pus.

Personally although I am a huge fan on Manuka honey for treating wounds I would never use it on a guinea pig.
As the wound can't be covered I imagine it would make a huge and very sticky mess, and prevent the wound draining freely so would actually be counter productive.
So in your case I would stick with an antiseptic solution and regular wound flushes, giving it all a chance to dry out in between.

Hey thanks for reply.

All she said for me to do is to push the
Puss out and Just keep it clean and open. Nothing aboit flushing it or anytging like that. What would you advise?

He’s on antibiotics which he has been on for like 4 weeks now. I dunno if their working to be honest.

I’m worried sick about him I Jusy want it to get better and for him to be ok.

As Swiss greys has said the wound will need to be flushed using a syringe and cleaning solution (saline) to really keep it clean

What antibiotics is he on?

Hi

I am very sorry. Fighting abscesses are no fun! :(
You can get sterile saline solution from a pharmacy or make your own by boiling 1/2 pint of water and then stirring 1 teaspoon of salt.
First Aid Kit: Easily available non-medication support products for an emergency

Please keep the abscess open for as long as as possible and squirt the flushing solution (any mild antiseptic will do) into the opening twice a day to wash all the pus out. Abscesses need to heal from the inside out. Every speck of infection that is left inside one of the pouches will sooner or later make the abscess flare up again.

In the later days, you have work off the thick scab off the opening, which is not at all pleasant but every extra day you can do it will help to prevent the abscess from coming back. Try to get to at least 5 days of flushing but the closer you can come to 10 days, the better!

What antibiotic and what dosage have you been prescribed?

Hi sorry for late reply.

He’s on baytrill

We at lost end atm, they have said there isn’t much more they can do as it keeps filling up. He’s had three operations now and it’s getting no better.

Any ideas?

Have they stitched the abscess open so you can flus it several times a day?
This (or surgical removal) are the only ways ot properly treat an abscess.
Also Baytril isn't actually the best antibiotic for abscesses.

You said he is just on antibiotics, but no matter what one he takes this on it's own won't be enough.
If you vet has not suggested any of the above treatments it might be time to look for a more experienced guinea pig vet I'm afraid.

Hey yeah he’s had both of these procedures and he’s been on that antibiotic for 2-3 months now and hasn’t made any doffeeence

I would definitely be asking for a change of antibiotic - like I said earlier Baytril isn't the best choice for abscesses.
And you said just a week or two ago that he hadn't had any of these treatments and the vet just told you to push the pus out?
So now you are saying he has had another operation and the abscess is open, and you are flushing it out?
How long have you had the wound open and flush it regularly for?
This can take quite a while (but certainly not 2-3 months).

Hey all just an update. We woke up this morning and tigger was not well at all. He was squealing every time he was touched and moved and his breathing was bad. Rang out of hours vets this morning and they asked to see him

We had to get him put down as they think he had loads fluid in his stomach and there was another lump come up.

We are very sad over this and actually not coping very well. We brought him home wit us this morning too.

So sorry you lost Tigger, you’ve been through such a lot with him, sending you big hugs x
Sleep tight little man 🌈
