I posted a few weeks ago in the new members area about my guineas, Tico and Jyn. This is just an update really, in case anyone was interested.

Basically, she's had some blood in her wee but also (interestingly) lumps that look like clots? She doesn't appear to be in any pain when urinating, although I've noticed sometimes she looks like she's squatting, but when she walks off she hasn't done anything. She's also all dry underneath, so isn't incontinent/dribbling.

I took her back to the vet after the antibiotics didn't work and the vet suggested perhaps it was sludge or stones. I live in a very hard water area and had foolishly been following the pellet bag instructions and not the forum's recommendations! For the last two weeks they've been on a strict diet of bottled (low calcium, I checked) water and only 1tbsp of pellets each per day. They are NOT happy about the reduced pellets and wheek at me while standing on their bowls! The diet seems to be doing something and I've seen fewer sludgy patches, but still some red lumps.

Today Tico went back to the vet for an x-ray and there's no sign of any stones. I've been asked to keep an eye on her for the next few weeks, and try to get a urine sample. In the meantime her weight seems fine, she's still talkative and demands food, she drinks plenty and she's getting braver. This weekend I'll be sewing them some fleece cuddle cups :)

Thanks for the update.
You have done a great job with your piggies and it sounds like it is all heading in the right direction.
I think for me using filtered water and limiting pellets were also the 2 best changes I made too.

This is what I get every time I go into their room. It looks like they want to have a word with me...

Glad that it is not stones!

Remove the pellet bowl... and use the pellets for enrichment feeding; like sprinkling the around during run time or in the cage, so they have to work harder for them. Consider using different hays for healthy enrichement. ;)

Also see the the relevant chapter (exercise time tips) in the weight guide how you can turn feeding time into enrichment time; this can also apply to how you feed your reduced pellets: Weight - Monitoring and Management

Forgot to say - when I picked her up from the vet on Friday evening the nurse said that while there's no stones, she does have a bit of sludge. Will continue with the low calcium food/water, try to get her to drink lots (she's not a big drinker), and have plenty of floor time. I've taken the bowls out as suggested.

Tico has been back for a checkup. She's lost a little weight and a urinalysis says there's a bit of infection. She's been prescribed with some more antibiotics and loxicom. She's doing red wees much less frequently now. There are still red lumps in the cage, but I'd say they're less frequent than they were. Hopefully she's on the mend now!
