Sooooo had to hav ditto back to the vets, his eye has sunk again even though the ulcer has healed. Now he has what looks like cherry eye ? Vets trying tiacil now 3 times a day. Hes had them in 3 times up to now and his eye looks worse than it did before the tiacil drops! The cherry looks larger and his eye has sunk more and looks sticky?! Is this normal ?

I'm sorry about poor Ditto's eye. I have no experience of this I'm afraid, but I hope it starts to recover soon. :)

This sounds similar to a piggy I had. She had an eye poke injury, and had Tiacil drops. Then a little while later, developed something else. Here is a photo of it in its early stages:

The vet thought she might have to have the eye removed, but in the end the eye was just left, as it really didn't bother her at all - it just looked nasty.

After a while it looked a bit like cherry eye, crossed with pea eye.

Pelicano- dittos eye looks like that but his fatty lump is almost covering his eye and and coming from every corner of his eye, so i took him to vets, they gave me tiacil and now his eyes almost closed And is leaking pus so hes going back tomorow am x

Best of luck. I'll be really interested to hear how you get on.

There was definitely no puss in my piggy's eye in the picture. I never did get to grips with what caused it. She was actually on antibiotics at the time when it came up like that, which was a bit odd.

Hi guys quick update - ditto has been to the vets this morning and he has had an allergic reaction to the tiacil. The vet doesnt want to operate on the eye due to risk of losing ditto under the aneasthetic :( so has given me fucithalmic ointment and told me to wash the eye with cooled boiled water as and when it needs cleaning up, he basically said ditto will need to be on the drops forever as the cherry eye is going to constantly irritate the eye.....

has your vet spoken to you about maybe trying an oral antibiotic? if ditto has an infection in the tissue surrounding his eye or in his tear duct, rather than the actual eye its self they be more effective. last year one of my piggies had inflamed conjunctiva and was treated successfully with septrin (she didn't have cherry eye tho)

ref pound shilling & pigs post.
i took one of mine to the vets nearly a week ago- she had a watery eye & a thinning patch of hair around her eye too.
i was afraid it could be fungal but the vet said she thought it was a bacterial infection, prescribed fucithalmic eye ointment 2x daily.
the vet was afraid the eye infection could also cause a blocked tear duct. she had her teeth checked as this too could cause problems.

i have been reading up on this & found that if teeth are misaligned or too long then they can protrude up into the roof of the mouth.
Or if the teeth rub causing an abcess in the mouth this can cause pressure to build up behind the eye, sometimes making the eye protrude or pus to be visible.
also found this link- some pictures a bit graphic - but hopefully might be something of use - i just googled dermoid ulceration in guinea pigs. http://davidlwilliams.org.uk/resources/file0271.pdf

So as Pound shilling & pig suggested. perhaps a general antibiotic would be beneficial to fight any general infection that may be there causing problems, as well as the eye bathing.
(is it just boiled water, cooled or did the vet suggest putting a pinch of salt in it also? might help?)

has a check been done to see if a foreign body (grass seed, thistle prickle from hay, etc) has found its way into or around the eye (or roof of mouth/nasal cavity)?

Dont know if this is any help or not but might be worth mentioning to the vet?
Hope Ditto's on the mend soon. xx

Ps. my girly is improving nicely :)
