I had Tia at the vets today. She had a patch of missing fur by her anus. She is eating well, but doesn’t move around much. The vet thinks it is probably a mass.
which probably is why Chester won’t leave her side. I think he senses she is not well. She is 8 yrs old in June or July.
I don’t know whether to have her put her to sleep. I have had her since she was 3 months old. I love her so much, but my feelings don’t matter, l have to do the best for her. I would appreciate others views.
At the moment the vet is trying antibiotic, to see if that will if solve her problems.

My Winifred was losing fur 'round there' in the days before she passed away 10 days ago. I assumed at the time it was related to the UTI she had just had, as all her fur underneath was wet due to lying in pee etc. After a course of Sulfatrim the fur was dry again, but I could see it was coming out round the anus. She passed away before a scheduled vet visit so I don't know if there was anything else going on.

If she's still eating normally, I would leave her for now. If she shows signs of discomfort, that's the time to opt for pts I think. If whatever she has is terminal, or it's just her time (she is a very good age) I think it's better to pass at home with her buddy nearby if possible - I still feel bad about my piggies who died on their own at the vets.

Sending you and Tia hugs

You know Tia best and you will know when it is time with guidance from your vet. Tia has had a wonderful long life with you.
Sending you both my very best wishes.
There are some very helpful posts in the Guinea Pig Info section, click on Guinea Pig Info in the green bar above. See under Behaviour, Bonding and Bereavement section. Sorry I tried to link them but I've had problems, they keep disapearing!

So sorry about Tia :hug:I would see how the AB goes first. if she is happy and eating and showing no pain then I’d give her a little longer. You know her best though and if you feel uneasy then go with your instinct

What a great age to live to; but because you have so many more memories it is not any easier facing the thought that the end may be near - and it is always coming far too soon, whatever the age! Ultimately, it is never down to the length for time but to the closeness of your bond.

I sincerely hope that the antibiotic can buy her a bit more time. Cherish every day she still has got her of zest of lifeand is there to greet you in the morning.

PS: Here are some practical tips for looking after piggies who do not move much to help keeping them as comfy as can be and know what to look out for re. any possible issues this can cause, especially with a frailer oldie: Looking After Guinea Pigs With Limited or No Mobility

So sorry that you have such news about Tia.
I know that getting a diagnosis like that feels as if the bottom has fallen out of the world.
Tia’s great age is a tribute to your love and care.
Holding you in my heart ♥️
