Hi!

Just last week we had a horrible thunderstorm that blew down trees, fences, and even ruined some roofs. The power went out and there were many loud noises, and my piggies were hiding for a long time, and they were pretty scared. Luckily, there wasn't a tornado, but what can I do if a tornado ever happens? what can i do to help my piggies?

Maybe you could cover their cage with a blanket so they feel safer? Hopefully they’re back to their normal selves now.

Hi! I live in an area that has frequent tornado warnings/watches. If there is possibility of severe weather, I normally keep my carrier near my piggies and have the option of getting them into the carrier if there is time or I just get them into the carrier. The piggies get to hang out in the carrier with snacks, hay, and water in the safe spot and are ready if there is anything major going on. We have the weather on so we can listen and watch to see if a bad storm cell is on its way and take cover. If you do have a tornado watch/warning, make sure you can go into your basement or in an interior room/closet that doesn't have access to windows.

Remember tornados can pop up quickly and sometimes there isn't time to get your pets. Make sure you get yourself and your family safe first. We had a tornado blow through our neighborhood when I was little and it was pretty amazing how fast it moved. Luckily our house only had minor damage, but it did more damage ten houses away from ours.

Hi

Make sure that you have a carrier ready to put them inside at all times if you need to rush to a safe place if you get a warning ahead. In a direct hit, unless you are at home and can find a safe space yourself, there is unfortunately not much you can do. :(

For thunderstorms and fireworks, we have got some very useful tips in this link here: Fireworks and Thunderstorms season: Pactical tips for guinea pig owners

You can learn more about how prey animal instincts work in guinea pigs and what you can do to help settling them down after a fright. It make take a few days for the triggered instincts to settle down again. The settling in tips also work after a bad fright:

Hi! Thanks for the advice! It's been a week since the thunderstorm. They're ok now!

Thanks! The thunderstorm that happened last week was pretty bad. Luckily, there weren't any tornados near where I live. Thanks for the advice!

Thanks! When Canada Day comes I'm sure there's going to be fireworks. Last week during Victoria Day weekend, there were fireworks. But, my piggies were actually fine!

You could leave the tv on or maybe some soothing music playing in the background so they don’t hear the fireworks as much
