Hi I have four great GPs but three of them hate being handled. They will ear from my hand one even sits.next.to me but as soon as I try to pick them up they are filled with terror.

They shake squeak and try to run of my lap. Is this normal?

You may find these threads here helpful in making friends with them. Many guinea pigs are not great cuddlers, but they can learn to be OK with being handled and you can learn to interact with them in other ways. Older guinea pig are calmer than wiggly youngsters. Try to praise them lots for every bit; they react to encouragement.

Thanks I think I'm going to leave them be. I don't mind that they don't like to be petted as they do show signs of affection in other ways I was just checking they were showing signs of normal behaviour.

Thanks again Wiebke

Not all piggies like being petted. Some hate being picked up. One of mine was only ever happy being petted on her terms in her cage. It sounds normal to me, but persistence, kindness and bribery usually win them round in the end.

One of my girls would dive bomb from my lap in terror and wheek the house down if I stroked her.

I've made a lot of progress with her by lifting her to and from the cage using a cosy or carrier. I only pet her head and stop once she let's me know she's had enough. I always let her come to me first and bribe her with yummy veg. Slowly but surely this has worked. She will never be a cuddler but that doesn't matter.

She's now the first to wheek when she hears my voice and practically climbs into my hands in the cage to see what yummy treats I have. She doesn't associate my hands with trying to chase and pick her up so it's really great :)

She loves sitting on my feet now too :)

Hopefully some of these things could help? Not sure if they will, but the main thing is time. She's taken months to come around but will be so worth it :)
