I used to use pine, until I realized it was not the best choice (oils, dust) and have recently switched to using a layer of pine first then paper bedding over that. The paper bedding is just a bit pricey and I was wondering if it would still be better for them long term and comfort-wise to use just aspen? I've read that it is the preferred wood bedding but what are your thoughts/opinions or experiences with it?

NEVER USE ASPEN OR CEDAR!

Pine is still the best choice to use but get the one that is soft and doesn't cause too much dust. Pine is not as oily as the aspen or cedar.

Actually, aspen is safe. Pine and Cedar are not safe. Kiln-dried pine is safe.
I've never used aspen though.

Have you ever thought of using fleece?

Paper based cat litter is also okay to use.

Nice to see another Californian on here.

I've tried fleece before but it just seemed like too much of a hassle. I took a look at the yesterdays news one, but they seem like little hard pellets and it doesn't look that comfy. I know that aspen is a bit more than pine but still less than the paper bedding. And yes I was under the impression that pine and cedar were not the best to use.
