How on earth do you keep the fleece clean!

I have 2 pigs(1 pregnant so staying on sawdust for now) indoors (in my room) in seperate 1m 20 cages, and I'm fedddd up with sawdust! as it gets everywhere, and is a painn to clean out, I'm thinking of changing to fleece, but surely this is going to be even more messy!?!

I am thinking constantly washing smeellly fleece everyday! how on earth do you keep them sooo clean!

Any advice/help would be great!

Hi

We change our fleeces every two to three days depending how dirty they are and just shake everything off them and brush them to get majority of hay etc off then bung them in washing machine which cleans them really well :) only problem is that after about 3 weeks the washing machine filter needs declogged :(

Hi,

I clean the mess up everyday and do a whole clean cage every 2 days.
Once you get into a routine you'll be fine, i found it difficult at first but i wont use anything but fleece now.

Heyoo I'm currently keeping my boars on fleece on the top level of their hutch, at the bottom they are just on lino tiles, newspaper and hay, i find that i need to change the top half every two days though all the hay is attracted to the fleece! So what ive found to keep hay from clogging up your washing machine is to use a washbag, you can buy them in most stores ie tescos or you could make your own hope you find what works for you soon :))

What if i did have the cage fleece and half just newspaper and a litter tray, so hopefully they will pee and poop in the tray or nwspapaper, could keep the hay in a hay rack and keep his little house on the fleece, that might work i suppose x

I have a cat litter box in their hutch that has pine pellet bedding in it and their hay. The rest of the hutch is towels with fleece on top. They do most of their peeing/pooping in the litter box when they are eating hay but I still do have to clean the rest of the hutch. I was using pine pellet bedding all over with fleece on top but it was way too messy and frustrating.

I've just gone from woodshavings to fleece and I can honestly say that I will never use woodshavings again!

I found woodshavings to be so messy, they would stick to my carpet, my socks, everything! And they weren't very absorbent, I had to clean out their cage from top to bottom daily. With fleece I put towels underneath and poo pick twice a day, every three days I change the towels and fleece.

Just remember to shake out your fleeces and towels before you wash them - you don't want hay clogging your washing machine!

I recently tried using fleece (was using woodshavings before) and messy wasn't the word! I swear it made mine poo even more rolleyes i've never seen so much, there were only two of them in a really big cage aswell. I was cleaning the poo up twice a day and even then it still looked messy. I used towels underneath the fleece but had to wash them often. So now I'm back using woodshavings.....

Fleece wasn't for me but as you can see it works for a lot of people, you should try it and see how you get along with it....everyones different :)

i love fleece use towels under neath it is messy but all my 5 live in the living room so its soooo much easier than shavings as less mess on the living room floor my boys love it to

no way to keep the fleece clean i sweep up twice a day & still its messy lol

I agree with Branston&Pickles - You will notice the poops more purely because they are sitting on top of the fleece where as before they would mix in with the shavings, but I much prefer fleece.

I have all mine on fleece. I have three trios, each group has a 5x2 C&C which is 4x2 fleece with incontinence pads underneath and then 1x2 litter box where their hay racks are etc which I was using newspaper/shavings but am currently trying newspaper/bunny bed o'linen. Since having the litter boxes, which I didn't really have before, they are more inclined to wee/poop in there but they do still go everywhere, just not as much on the fleece.

The trick with it is to sweep out the poops regularly to make it look nicer, otherwise it is just a big ol' poopy mess! I put on gloves and do it by hand as I find actually sweeping with a brush makes them fly all over the place. I find with the inco pads/fleece I can do a full change of the 4x2 once a week, litter box more often. I have big wash bags that I put everything in to save my washing machine a little. Fleece dries really quickly, but depending on what you have underneath will depend on how quickly that will dry. I did use towels which I tumble dried so was quick, but costly. I have since bought enough inco pads for two sets for each cage and I hang them up to dry as there is no rush between the changes (because of my having two sets).

I'd definately say it is worth a go. Get a few cheap towels from Asda (or somewhere similar) and a cheap fleece and give it a go. It isn't for everyone so don't spend a lot until you know it is for you.

I made liner's one with just fleece and cotton bedspread (which had cotton wadding in it) and another with that and a mattress protector, the first one smell's after 3 days the second i can leave all week and still dont smell. You have to sweep or hoover the poo's up every day or to depending on size of cage and how many pig's, you could always get a black primary coloured fleece or heavily patterened to disguise them abit.

Hi,

I have two sows and two boars in the bedroom both on fleece as we can't afford to keep using woodshavings etc plus they are sooo messy!

I use a littertray in with the fleece and towels and the sows will wee and poo in this so I change thier fleece once a week.

The boars however wee/poo on the fleece so I spot clean twice a day with a cat poop scoop.

I change thier fleece and towels every two days and have lots of spare fleece/towels so I can change it a couple of times and then wash a load together.

Much cleaner and I love the fleece idea!

We've just bought a wash bag so we can wash the fleeces without breaking the washer. Hope they work.
