Hello Everyone,

I have two half brother piggies Billy & Teddy. Both are from a rescue centre and their bedding has always been newspaper and woodshavings.

I noticed that Bill had a wheezy squeak so took him to a piggie vet who could not find anything wrong with him.

I am now wondering if it could be the wood shavings, so would like to have a go at using fleeces.

Please could you give me some more information on using fleeces, and tell me how I what I would need to do to start using this.

Billy & Teddy's home is a double cavy 120 cage.

Many thanks
Anj, Billy & Teddy. :)

It is a good idea not to use shavings as many guinea pigs become wheezy with them. If you want to use fleece you can buy it cheaply from primark, ikea and tesco to mention a few places. You have to wash each fleece three times without fabric conditioner to make it absorbent. Never use fabric conditioner to wash fleece. I put down a layer of towels and two layers of fleece. Two or three times a day I collect up poops and every three days I change it. You may need to change it more as you have a smaller cage then I do.

Hi,
I've just recently converted to fleece (thanks to this fantastic forum) after using wood shavings for over a year. It takes some getting used to eg regular poop scoops, etc. There is a great thread on here about using fleece but being a newbie I'm unsure how to paste a link ( I'm sure someone will point you in the right directions though). If you do decide to use fleece, The Range in Reading have some priced at £3.99 and they're quite large but only plain colours. I've also bought some puppy pads from Buylogy (where Wickes used to be in town) 30 for £6.99, only just started using them but seem good. I know I'm not exactly answering your question but I hope it's some help. I'm sure someone more experienced will post the link to the fleece thread and give more advice.

Yes, shavings can cause problems for piggies - I layer newspaper sheets - then an old towel, then a pretty fleece - you need to wash the fleece 3 times without using fabric conditioner - this ensures that the piggy pee goes through the fleece and into the towel and doesnt just sit on the top of the fleece - I also wash the fleece after a few days in non- bio washing powder (you shouldnt use biological ) - poundstretcher do 2 really good sized fleece blankets for £5.99 - alternatively you acn buy ready made fleece liners form some of the people on here and on e-bay if you prefer.

My pig became a little wheezy, chesty cough etc. and it turns out he has an allergy to sawdust and different types of hay, he basically has hay fever so after he eats his eyes are a bit wattery but then it calms down he also sneezes at sawdust even if he's near it for no longer than a minuet.

He's now on fleece and is alot more comfey !
I just use a layer of towel and then fleece on top, i did use newspaper before but in the end i didn't really need it and it served no purpose for me so i just stopped, and it's still fine.
