I have been using wood shavings for years and have never had any problems with it. However, I am getting fed up with it blowing all over the garden when I clean the pigs out (I know that sounds lazy) and just feel like a change.

The questions I have are:

What is it like value for money wise?

I have a 6ft by 2ft by 2ft hutch and at the minute use a thickish layer of shavings in the living area followed by a layer of hay over the top. I clean this out fully once a week. How long would a bag of Megazorb last? A large bag of shavings which costs £2.99 lasts the pigs about three weeks.

Where do you buy your Megazorb from?

Will it work in an outdoor hutch?

Can I use it for my gerbils and hamster (who are currently housed on wood shavings as well)?

Thank you for any advice :)

i have used it, but found it much cheaper to get from a horsey type farm shop, approx 6.50 a bag as opposed to nearly 9.00 in a pet shop.

I use it for Joyce the hammy too.

Its quite lightweight so still may blow round the garden!

Heres my costings for finacard and megazorb :-) works out cheaper than running the washer and stuff to use finacard!

Finacard needs changing once per week and I use 10 litres at a cost of 59p. Poop corners spot cleaned daily taking 2 minutes - negative I have to have a parcel delivered and i work weekdays!

Megazorb needs changing once per week and I use 9.5 litres at a cost of £1.23
Poop corners cleaned daily taking 2 minutes - negative so light and fluffy it ends up trained around the house

I never answered your questions.

The bag of megazorb is 65l uncompressed so it will last 65 litres worth , if you know how many litres your shavings are when fully expanded you can compare. But I find with megazorb being more absorbent you need to clean out less (based on hamsters)

Finacard is another option

Its safe for hamsters, so probably is for gerbils too.

I've never heard of finacard before!

Do you buy these online or in a local store?

Thanks
Becky :-)

Online only as far as I'm aware , it has free delivery via a courier and takes less than a week to arrive, its £13 for 220 litres compressed delivered

Hi Claire, I use Megazorb for the indoor piggies and hamsters and pay around £7.80 for a 85lt bag which I get from a local livery/small animal feed supplier. It is super absorbant and keeps smells to a minimum - the only thing I will say is that when the piggies have a mad 5 minutes it tends to go everywhere!

For the shed piggies I tend to use Aubiose which comes in a 20kg bag and costs around £9.50, but it lasts for ages. Both are very good bedding, the Aubiose is heavier than the Megazorb which I finds stops it blowing around quite so much. It can feel a little "sharp" to the touch but once you have the hutches made up I don't find it harsh at all. Here is a link to the Aubiose website/stockists http://www.aubiose.co.uk/stockists.php

I find it amazing how everyone has different things that work for people. I found Finacard smelled after 2 days and the absorbency I wasn't impressed with.

Megazord will most likely blow over the card as doglovin says, I do find it quite messy and only use it in my hay trays it lasts a week but as my pigs now have hay everywhere they are usually never in there hay trays.

Hi

Here is the website for finacard http://www.finacard-uk.com/

I used eco pet bed in my outdoor hutch. That comes in a 20kg bag for about £8. The best place to try to pet food suppliers or equestrian shops. If you buy it online it will be a lot more expensive.

I use megazorb in my boys litter trays and I get 85l for £7, again from a local feed store.

I have used megazorb outside and hated it! So messy and it always got shoved into one corner of their hutch so for the majority of the time they were sat just on newspaper.

I find megazorb great for indoors in a litter tray but just awful in a hutch
