I'm new here (so sorry if this is posted in the wrong section)

so i just got my first ever Guinea pigs, two girls who I named Hazel and Bubbles
now I knew they would be fairly noisy but I was hoping I could cope with it at night with them in my bedroom (stupid idea because I'm a terrible sleeper as it is) anyway as soon as I turn the light off they start making so much noise. I'm not sure what to do because I don't really want to move them into the living room because we have birds that are very noise and the tv is offtend on really loud, I was worried that might be too much for them. The only other place would be the hall, we have a corner that their cage would fit it, but this would mean they wouldn't be able to have their run. I currently have them in cage that is 45 x 22 inches (not sure if that's big enough on its own) but then they also have a run attracted which is 35 x 35 inches. Now hazel hasn't even found the way out into the run yet but Bubbles loves it, and Ill kind of feel bad if she can't have it (but what's evers best) I did think about moving the cage in the hall at night and then bringing it back in during the day so they can have access to the run too but I figured that would be stressful for them. Anyway some advice would be appreciated, as I'm stuck for what to do!

The problem is with earplugs is that I have unnaturally small ears so they end up either not fitting or falling out constantly and hurting :/.

My pig lives in our livingroom and we are incredibly noisy and the tv is always on. He doesn't mind at all. He popcorns when he hears us coming. It's now become evident he doesn't like it when the house is totally quiet and I think that's because he's used to so much going on. When it's totally quiet he looks out the cage for us as if to say where the frick are you all haha. I think every pig is different when it comes to noise.
I agree with the poster above on their suggestion of ear plugs though.

they will get used to noise if you let them, mine have their run on the front lawn that is next to a busy road (well we live in the sticks so busy for round here) buses, hgv's cars motorbikes etc all go by & they don't take an awful lot of notice in the run. when they were indoors the dog used to go nuts at the postie & they didn't flinch, even when they were sat on my lap, no real effort was made. my girls have lap time & there is talking & music playing in the background.
they never bother too much at the sound of fireworks outside or if there are power tools nearby making a row.
if you can build them up to noise gradually they get used to it quite well :)

are they bar biters, squeakers or generally noisy neighbours running around drinking at all hours of the night?

xx

One of them constantly squeaks and likes to run around a lot where as the other one sits in the corner quietly and only occasionally makes a noise :)

I'm a bad sleeper like you and have to use earplugs as the slightest noise keeps me awake.I have my boys in my room and they are quite noisy. There are some earplugs you can get that when you squeeze them go really thin so should fit in your ears.Have a look in boots etc. Also I recently got my pigs some camomile harvest from pets at home and they were so quiet after eating it so maybe it chills them out? That's worth a try too.

I am also a light sleeper and could never have the piggies in my bedroom!

You current cage (without the run) is the absolute babe minimum size required, so I would not move it anywhere that they can't keep the run attached - this extra space is very important.

I think they would probably cope fine in the living room and quickly get used to the hustle and bustle of it.
Ours are in a fairly calm corner of a large open plan living room, so there is usually some sort of noise and movement. The kids are always coming and going, they have friends in and out, they both play instruments and practice in the living room (one of them plays trumpet, so it's not quiet), I hoover daily (we have tile floors), etc.

Initially the pigs used to hide a lot, but now they will quite often be out in the open while all of this is going on.

The other alternative would be to get some child size foam ear plugs. My daughter uses these for shooting, and I order them in bulk from a hunting supply store on the internet. Basically do a search and you will come up with lots of alternatives with noise ratings, etc. These should work in even very small ears.

Mine are in the room opposite my hall. They are next to the front door. They cope with a very noisy Hoover, noisy teenagers, a noisy boyfriend , me shouting at the kids, barking dogs and slamming doors no problem

I agree, I also could not manage to sleep with them in the bedroom. Ours in in a quiet corner of the living room and also have kids running about, playing, dropping things etc.
They DO get used to the noise eventually and stop hiding. We close the living room door at night in an effort to disguise kitchen noises, they still hear up get up but the wheeking only gets super intense the moment you push that door handle.
Morning veggies and they learned the routine ;)

Better that than have you awake all night every night.

I found that when I first got my pigs I would constantly be aware of any noises and such... I think you get used to it after a while though as I don't really hear mine too much lately.

Every once in a while 1 boar will get really frisky and chase/mount the other one which makes a lot of noise...but other than that it's not too bad.

How long have you had them in your room for? Maybe give them a few weeks and see how they go if you'd prefer to keep them in the room :) it might just be that they are young/scared when the lights go out - perhaps they will get used to it? Just a thought

Ditto to sgraft. Mine are in my bedroom and I hardly slept at first. Nowadays I sleep fine, they only wake me if there's a real problem or if my internal clock senses something is wrong.
