feeling a little dissapointed in myself, kids have been away this weekend so went out to buy our first gp cage ready for our new additions (not bought yet but hopefully soon for kids bdays as a suprise!) and now realising I think its too small for 2 piggies:( its a meter in length and has a little upstairs with ramp. not sure what to do as havent really got much more space for anything much bigger in the house but wanted to get a bonded pair for company.. should i not get any piggies or have them outside in a hutch and garage for winter?

This cage is really too small for two pigs.
It should actually have a lengh of 1,5 meter.

You can built a cage 1x1 meters on your own, if you have the space for one meter in lenght.

The minimum ground floor space for two guinea pigs is 2x4 ft (120x60cm), however, if you have boars, it would be much better, if you could offer them a 2x5 ft (150cmx60cm).

However, if you are cramped for space, you could think about creating a two story 2x4 ft cage if that is possible? Don't panic; your pigies are perfectly OK for a while in their current cage, so you have plenty of time to think things through and search for bargains.

PS: Just to show you the difference in size between a 50x100cm and 60x120cm cage, here is an old picture from when I was saving up for C&C grid cage (and had a lot less piggies!):

For 2 guinea pigs, should be 2x4 C&C cage.

It's about 28 x 56 inches.

Please don't buy your guinea pigs from pet stores or breeders. There are so many homeless guinea pigs waiting for good home.

As for surprise gift for kids, you will be the main caregiver to the pigs, right?
Guinea pigs are shy in nature, hope your kids will not expect too much from them.

when i first got guinea pigs i had one of these cages for 2 piggies, but 1 soon found out they were 2 small, so bought another one and fitted it together

Hi Barnyard

Is there anyway you can take the cage back and get a refund? You don't want to have spent money on something that isn't suitable?

I know you were planning on getting guinea pigs as a suprise for your childrens birthday but sometimes these things don't always work out the way you had hoped.

My daughter was desperate for guinea pigs for her birthday but I got them four months early. Firstly I was lucky to find a great hutch and knew someone who had baby piggies and secondly I didn't feel it was right for an animal to be given as a gift (each to their own on this one :) )

You also need to make sure that you have EVERYTHING in place before you get any guinea pigs so this means having adequate housing, food, bedding etc, not easy to do as a suprise :))

I would have a look at the options you have and decide firstly if you actually have room to provide your guinea pigs with the space they need, if they are going to live indoors or if they will live outdoors in the summer and indoors in winter. Remember they live a long time.

I have kept guinea pigs outside for most of the year, moving the whole hutch into a insulated shed with windows in the colder months (no shed now so they are coming inside). Putting them in a garage is certainly an option providing you don't keep a car in there and there is some light from somewhere.

Also bear in mind that young children need prompting and encouragement to help care for a pet. I say help as the guinea pigs will be your responsibility. My little girls loves her piggies but has to be reminded every day to feed them, cuddle them etc otherwise she'd forget. Iif they are in a chilly garage where there is not much space to get them out for a cuddle the appeal can soon be lost for a child, especially if you have a garage like we do that isn't accessed from inside the house - its a cold dash down the garden when its throwing it down :))

Have a think about your options and I am sure you will find something that works for the whole family. If not then the guinea pigs may have to wait for a while. Perhaps mention the idea of guinea pigs to your children, my daughter had so much fun setting up the hutch and deciding on which guinea pigs she wanted that we felt it was better than a suprise. I think its lovely for children to have pets and I am so glad we have our boys but its certainly not easy!

good luck and HTH

hi thanks for your reply, alot of what you said I have already been thinking about! We are now just going to wrap up guineapig book or somethiing and then tell the kids this is an early birthday present and let them help get the stuff ready and then go and fetch our new family members! both kids have birthdays in december so thought getting them now would be a nice change for kids (usually they have all their presents in one go!xmas and bday) think we may take cage back, they will be inside in winter and then I think will **** get hutch for summer months :)

I am sure that your kids will be equally as excited with being part of the preparations as if they had got a surprise!

Hopefully, things work out that you can rehome from a rescue; you will have the guarantee that you only get healthy, handled, garanteed not pregnant and well bonded piggies - and have always a place to fall back on for advice and support. Nothing of that you'd get in a shop, sadly!
