Some of you may have wondered what the funny piggy names in my signature mean. They are actually Welsh.

This came about when my newly bereaved middle aged lady Dizzy fell in love with freshly neutered young Llewelyn, who had been rescued from a wildlife place in Midwales in 2007 and been then transferred to a Midlands rescue, where I took Dizzy for a round of dating.
Since my husband is Welsh, he wanted me to keep the name and - what was rather harder to achieve - with the proper Welsh pronounciation! Dizzy's death in 2009 coincided with the opportunity to make my long term dream to have a group of guinea pigs come true, so Llewi's new wives all got a Welsh name with a suitable meaning and it has snowballed from there.

I usually try my best to come up with a suitable name for each new adopted piggy, either for its looks or personality. You may find some themes, though. For guinea pigs with a well established name, I try to find a similar sounding Welsh name. Often I let the rescue choose their preferred Welsh names from a shortlist of suitable names, not just the piggies I am adopting! Some of my piggies have been named in memory of a previous piggy that is very special to me.

Here are all the Tribe piggies mentioned in my signature in the order I adopted them.

2009
Llewelyn: Celtic gods Lugh and Belenus (fire + light); pronounced Tkhloo-EH-lin. My very capable Tribe patriarch without whose steady paws on the reins I could never have built up a such a great group! RIP 2011
Rescued neglected from an enclosure in Midwales he was sharing with other guinea pigs, rabbits and chicken.
Llewelyn-avatar-01.webp

Nerys: Lady (with a huge figure!), teddy. Hasn't yet met a calorie she can pass by! Now 8 years old. [RIP 2016]
Nia: Bright, pronounced Nee-ah (Nerys' energetic sister and sometime top lady of the Tribe), RIP 2014
The sisters were unwanted, unhandled ex-children's pets with razor-sharp baby claws.
Nerys-avatar-03.webp Nia-avatar-03.webp

Taffy: Beloved (because she needed it after being bred nonstop in horrible conditions for a year), aby, RIP 2014 aged 6 years. The oldest or one of the oldest survivors from that huge rodent rescue action that even made it onto tv later on. Very much beloved and respected by all her mates. She suffered from congenital cataracts not long after she reached adulthood.
Telyn: Harp, pronounced Tellin; Taffy's last rescue-born aby daughter. She had an ear-piercing wheek and a very loud voice, and simply couldn't shut up. Sadly died young from heart failure caused by uncontrolled inbreeding. RIP 2011
Telyn is the little aby in my avatar.
Taffy-avatar-03.webp Telyn-avatar-01.webp

Cariad: Darling - which she was! A coronet. Pronounced Car-yadd. RIP 2014.
Not the brightest, but sweet natured. Wouldn't leave the cage for a week because of a new darker fleece in front of it. I had to lift her out for her dinners...
Ceri: Love, her stunning cousin. Name sounds similar to Kerrie. Last minute addition after the rescue lady decided to not keep her for herself but wanted to make sure she would not be bred from. A friendly girl that got on with everypig. RIP 2014
Cariad-avatar-01.webp Ceri-avatar-04.webp

2010
Fflur: Flowers, pronounced Fleer; crested. 4 year old no longer wanted bereaved sow Flower, RIP in emergency op 2010 after only two very happy months with the Tribe. Llewelyn's last big love.
Fflur-avatar-01.webp

Ffion: Spoken Fee-on. Foxglove, named in memory of Fflur; huge personality that loved to sit at my feet in the kitchen while I was cutting up the piggy veg. No longer wanted with no information of her background. Came into rescue with three daughters(?), but died very young and unexpectedly from sudden acute heart failure. RIP 2010, aged 1 year (?).
Ffowlyn: Chicken/Fowl for her half-long chicken tail; pronounced Fowlin. An aby/long-hair cross. Ffion's remaining daughter (?) and Telyn's best friend. RIP 2013
Ffion-avatar-01.webp Ffowlyn-avatar-02.webp

Hafina: Summer. Pronounced Hah-VEE-nah. A most gentle, mature golden sow with permanently blocked tear ducts that was found dumped in a cardboard box with two other sows, one of them lactating, in full sun on a hot day on a private person's a doorstep. RIP 2011.
The other piggy in my avatar!
Hafina-avatar-01.webp

Caron: Loving; another coronet whose rescue name was Carron (from a Scottish river), part of a large rescue from rat infested horrible conditions. A very quirky lady! RIP 2015
Caron-avatar-01.webp

2011
Tanni: Little Fire, pronounced Tannee. Peru cross. A dumped hobby breeder sow that arrived in rescue in a box with some very neglected unwanted boars; could hardly be handled at first - which was what saved her from being bred and gave her her name! She is now 6 years old.
[RIP 2017]
Tanni-avatar-03.webp

Hywel: Eminent, pronounced Howell. Llewelyn's successor with the charisma to lead a big group. Surrendered after he bulied all other boars he was bonded with and nearly died from rare post-neutering complications 5 years ago. He is now coming up to 7 years old and has somewhat mellowed with age. [RIP 2016 shortly before his 7th birthday]
Hywel-avatar-02.webp

Tegyd: Beautiful <like a> doe; pronounced Teggid. Formerly Mrs Taggy. Cataract sow with attitude. Ex-pet. RIP 2014
Tegyd-avatar-03.webp

Terfel: Oak Prince, for his ginger crown; pronounced Tervel. Rescued from a shed full of fighting boars. Gentle and devoted master diplomat for the new cataract sows group with Taffy and Tegyd, and later Mali. RIP 2015
Terfel-avatar-04.webp

Ffwlbri (pronounced Fullbree): Moonlight, for her dramatic colouring. Dominant peru sow, took over the leadership from Nia. Came into rescue totally matted in a rat cage.
Tesni (pronounced Tess-nee): <Sun>warmed. Buff self sister of Ffwlbri.
Ffwlbri-avatar-05.webp Tesni-avatar-04.webp
Tegan Syndod: Beautiful Surprise; pronounced Teegan Sundod. Tesni's unexpected daughter, born here. Named in memory of recently passed and much missed Telyn, whose name was initially Tegan before her nickname stuck. Quite a diva!

Hedydd: Skylark (pron: Heddith). Crested. Adopted as playmate for baby Tegan. Loved to climb. Part of a "cat's takeaway" fend and breed for yourself back garden lot. Quietly assertive.
Heulwen: Sunshine (pron: Hyle-wenn). Hedydd's timid sister or half-sister from a previous litter who kind of sneaked in, seeing that their poor mum had yet another litter of six ginger girls while in rescue!
Hedydd-avatar-05.webp Heulwen-avatar-3.webp

2012
Ffraid: Bridget/Bride, formerly Freya. Pronounced Fryde. 4 year old emergency intake and permanent foster. Yet another ginger crested with a white nose. Arrived sight unseen. RIP 2015, aged ca. 7 years.
Bethan: Aby. Formerly Betty, groupmate of Freya's, RIP 2014
Bethan loved people and liked to climb on my lap.
Ffraid-avatar-04.webp Bethan-avatar-04.webp

Bryn Oscar: 5 year old bereaved neutered boar for my new Elderlies Group. Didn't listen to either name, but had the time of his life in the year he spent here! RIP 2013 aged 6 years.
Bryn-avatar-02.webp

Mali: Molly, pronounced Mahlee. Formerly Nala. 5 year old cataract sow. Emergency intake in need of a sanctuary space; owners moved into sheltered housing with no pets allowed. RIP 2015 at ca. age 8 years. Feisty with a real zest for life and a joy for zooming, cataracts and arthritis notwithstanding!
Mali-avatar-05.webp

Hafren: Sabrina/Severn (Hah-vren). Ginger with white crest, named in memory of Hafina. She now lives with Iola as part of my Two Fat Ladies team, sharing the same outlook on life.
Nesta: Agnes/Chaste. Spayed ASBO companion of Hafren. Another teddy that now lives with similar coloured Nerys who she thinks is her auntie. Nesta and Hafren were the rescue's choice to help make space after a job lot of very pregnant breeder sows had been dumped on their drive. They'd been overlooked for several months. Ex-children's pets.
Hafren-avatar-02.webp Nesta-avatar-01.webp

2013
Pili Pala: Butterfly (Peelee Pahlah) because of her ginger eye patch. I have admittedly a bit of a thing for red dutch abys or perus, as you may have noticed! Rescued from about as horrible conditions as they come. She still has a bald patch from repeatedly biting open a mite infested area. She has gradually worked her way up the ranks to take the lead of her group over from Hedydd.
Papi: Poppy (Pahpee). Pili's rescue-born cousin, named for her mostly ginger and black colouring. Tiny for her age, and still a rather timid/nervous personality. [2017 just three days after her husboar Maelog]
Pili Pala-avatar-01.webp Papi-avatar-01.webp

Maelog: Battle Prince, pronounced Mylog. Formerly Mallow. Started as temporary and then permanent foster for TEAS, now fully adopted. Companion to a dental boar he had fallen out with. He took over the Elderlies group from Bryn and then became leader of the short-hair half of the Tribe after I split the big group at the beginning of 2014.
Rhosyn: Rose; pronounced Rhosin. Formerly Rosa. Maelog's wife, RIP in emergency op 2014. Arrived at TEAS with suspicions over dental issues/facial injury after living with several rabbits.
Maelog-avatar-01.webp Rhosyn-avatar-01.webp

2014
Bedo: "Little Splendid Lord", aby. Pronounced Beddoh. He definitely lives up to it! Aby boar, dumped on Cannock Chase on a cold autumn night with his mate. He was a superb and devoted nursery nurse to his four little wifelets and is doing his best to keep his group on an even keel!
Bedo-avatar-02.webp

Mererid (Meh-reh-rid): Margaret/Pearl. My black pearl... sadly now with congenital cataracts. The most relaxed, but naughtiest of the Triplets, with a passion for rubber slipper soles.
Myfina (similar to Mer-VEE-na): My Lovely One. The largest and the leader.
Morwenna (mor-WEN-na): White Seas for her fluffy white back end. The smallest and most tightly strung. She was my Pocket Rocket as a baby.
TEAS-born litter sisters. Part of a large multi-species rescue from bad conditions with uncontrolled breeding. The argumentative sisters are a varying mix of three breeds. Initially fosters, now adopted.
TEAS - triplets Jan 2015.webp

Angharad (Ang-HARR-ad): Much Loved. Young orphan living with a rabbit after the loss of mum and 3 dead-born siblings; now living with Bedo and the Triplets and providing a quiet counterpoint to her lively adoptive family. Swiss Teddy/coronet cross.
[Died 2017, coming up to her 3rd birthday]
Angharad avatar-02.webp

2015
Iola: formerly Lola. Originally rescued from a black sheep "rescue" after having an early pregnancy. Looking for a new home after the death of her much loved elderly companion, but not able to find a rescue space. Laid-back, greedy and surprisingly dominant at the same time, but with a caring heart. Referred via TEAS.
Iola-avatar-01.webp

Helygen: Willow, pronounced Helliggen. Crested. Permanent private foster. Bereaved young emergency intake after landloard didn't allow new companion. Her loving human dad is staying in touch. Very shy, but in love with Maelog.
Helygen-avatar-01.webp

Carwyn: Blessed Love. Coronet; ex-breeder neglect case. He spent the first three years of his life in a foot square breeder box. Bumped back into rescue after a first adoption ran into trouble. Named in memory of my three coronet girls. Looked after old and frail lady Ffraid during the last months of her life and then was treated to two young wives after failing to come to an agreement with Iola as to who should come top.
Carwyn-avatar2.webp

Briallen: Primrose, pronounced Bree-AKH-len. Very pretty aby, but a badly traumatised ex-toddler's pet.
Heini (Haynee): Lively. Crested. Baby companion of Briallen. A very lively wifelet that taught her adored daddy-pig Carwyn how to run, play and popcorn.
Briallen-avatar-02.webp Heini-avatar-02.webp

2016
Gethin: Dusky, for his colouring. Sheltie. Neutered boar. From a house overrun with procreating piggies. A real sweetie boy!
Very happily married to then 5 year old Tesni after her daughter Tegan went off him a few hours after arriving back home from their rescue meet. Doh!
Gethin-avatar-01.webp

Nosgan: Nightsong (because in the first weeks, you could only hear him, but never see him); former name Victor (Meldrew, the grumpy old man from "One Foot in the Grave" comedy series). Teddy cross.
His owner had this adopted boar neutered after the death of his mate, but he failed to get accepted by any of her sows (the rescue has been notified).
Nosgan did get on well with newly bereaved Nesta as next door company through the bars (they are as alike as I could get in personality and looks!), but she didn't want him to share her space even though he was the only piggy she'd never teeth chattered at through the bars. Since Nosgan was not quite happy with that state of affairs, I found him a little teddy rescue boar that has really brought Nosgan out.

Nye: Noble. Teddy. Neutered boar. Born ca. July 2016. Adopted November 2016 from The Potteries Guinea Pig Rescue.
Nye had been a last minute additional offering to a free-ads pair of boars; according to his owner he was a year old - and that with his testicles just starting to descend... He has been neuered in January 2017. Nye and Nosgan have really taken to each other and are the perfect neighbours for my spayed single Nesta. Nye is a cheeky, but rather happy-go-lucky character.
IMG_3276_edited-3.webp

Hapus: Happy, pronounced Happis; crested, 6 months.
Llawen: Merry, pronounced Tkhlowen (the 'ow' rhymes with shower) smooth, 6 months. Skittish stuck in rescue sisters, part of a large rescue operation from horrible surroundings.
They have joined Carwyn and Heini, who looks like their sister in Autumn 2016.

2017
Calli. Peru. Aged ca. 7-8 years. A friend's sow that has come here to live out her life with piggy company after losing her last age mate in January.
I'd been looking after Calli and her then two companions for 6 months in 2015 while my friend had a building nightmare over an unsafe extension. I'd offered my friend then to take on the last survivor if they became depressed. Calli has a rather nervous disposition even though he loves to wheek for her dinner!
IMG_3463_edited-2.webp

Pioden: Magpie, pronounce Pee-OH-den. Abyruvian (aby/peru cross). 3 year old bereaved and no longer wanted neutered boar who had just failed a bonding attempt at his rescue. Maelog's successor; arrived end of February. Very large and a bit rampant, but happily bonded with Maelog's widows.
IMG_3736_edited-1.webp

Hyfryd: Lovely; pronounced Herv-rerd. Crested. Adopted in March as stuck in rescue; mum and daughter are rather skittish around both humans and other guinea pigs. Found dumped in a tree stump in a park with another, also pregnant sow and a boar.
Hirael: Long Brow; pronounced Heeryle. Crested. Her rescue born daughter.
IMG_4696_edited-2.webp IMG_4154_edited-3.webp

Barri: Summit (for his golden patch on the top). Aby. Neutered boar ca. 10 months old boar. Adopted in May. Barri fetched up in rescue after being treated wrongly for severe fungal and being recommended for pts by the treating vet. He has made a full recovery with the correct application of his meds. Bonded with Briallen.

I love your names, every time I see them I wish I'd used Cornish names for my piggies. After all my human babies have them! :)

Bless them, they are all so gorgeous
And the names are simply perfect, I also really love Welsh names; always loved the sound of that language.

And thank you for adding the meaning and the pronunciation! :D

I love the story behind the names, and love that they are all Welsh.

Maybe our next one will have a Swiss German name.

What a great post. Its lovely to meet all your piggies, past and present x

Bryn Oscar came from BARC - he wasn't quite the bereaved old gentleman in search of new love he was advertised as, he turned out to be a most wily escape artist with the mindset of a Casanova and the ambition of a Genghis Khan let loose in Las Vegas, making sure he packed a lifetime of naughtiness into the last year of his life! Very much missed... :D
:bronco:

I have so much enjoyed reading all of this :) Cariad - bless her. One of my favourites from the forum

:D So many piggies, and all so beautiful. Taffy and Pila Pala and Briallen are my favourites - I just LOVE Aby's! Also Ceri - she had such a sweet face, bless her. All of them finding love and peace in their final years, thanks to Wiebke.

Sounds like a typical naughty BARC piggy!

You may have noticed that I have an extremely soft spot for red dutch abys (or perus, only they are a lot rarer), too! I adopted Taffy in memory of my Minx (with a 3 months wait in between spotting her in a bunch of 45 freshly rescued pregnant sows and baby Telyn being old enough for the long trip South from a now closed rescue in Scotland) and then had to wait over 4 months again to see whether Pili Pala was adoptable due biting open her mites patch. The things you do for love!

What a lovely post, super to see all those piggies and hear their stories. Bryn Oscar sounds like he was an amazing character!

I have two naughty BARC bunnies. I didn't realise the BARC piggies were just as naughty!
Oh yes! Alfie is quite the charmer with his ladies, they all got their nails clipped today, the girls screamed like they were being murdered, Alfie just lay there, put his paws out as if to say, "go on Boss, get it over with!" :lol!:

Lovely post. All your piggies are gorgeous. But I actually went AWW out loud when I saw Carwyn he's so handsome. :luv:

He is a stunner, isn't he? He's come all the way from South Shields from Northeast Guinea Pig Rescue. Apart from the distance, he ticked all my boxes, and we managed to sort transport. His dad and two lookalike brothers have all died soon after arriving in rescue or - in the case of his last brother - within months of being adopted. I am still in contact with his fosterer and meet her at various rescue dos. :(

Thank you for this thread - it's lovely to see the pictures of all of them together. I confess most of the names I can't pronounce :)
