I've got the urge again for piggies! (& found I had a account here & post from 4 years ago :{ )
I'd like to keep them in the bird room as its the only dog free space, however the birds eat allot of veg & yummies & smell fairly good
My fear is the piggies might smell? I think I remember hamsters being smelly when was little.....
cage would be cleaned every evening along with the birds, but after doing some reading sounds like they pee & poo anywhere they can so may not be too easy to clean
So be truthfull- can they get wiffy on a daily basis?

Guinea pigs themselves do not smell bad at all. They have a lovely warm fragrance. The cage will smell if not kept clean. You sound like you will be cleaning it often so I should not think there will be a problem. :)

I don't think you should have any problems with smell if you clean them out regularly. They do poop a lot, but I find that twice a week is sufficient & I use megazorb bedding. :)

The main smell is the hay really. They can get a bit whiffy from the wee, but obviously good spot cleaning helps a lot with that. But hay does smell. Some people like the smell of hay more than others, of course!

I think to be truthful they are fairly stinky. I love them. but other people always smell them and I find that cleaning out twice a week is ok but you cannot let it go longer then a few days at most. If you happen to be in the room alot you get used to the smell, however walking first thing in the morning they do smell.

Just being honest!

Well they are animals so they do smell bless them! But I don't find my girls to be too bad. Now boars that aren't neutered are another thing completely! The stink! But they are wonderful :-) x x x

I think that this thread may show that different people may have different degrees of sensitivity to smells so whether they are stinky may be somewhat objective. Of course if you let the cleaning go for a long time, probably everyone would agree, but other than that I'm thinking some people might get a whiff at three days and some not until 4 or 5. (And I LOVE the scent of timothy hay.) :)

I think it depends what you keep the piggies on as well.Whilst being indoors (for the first time) this winter my girls have been on several different beddings. Initially wood shavings which didn't smell too much at all but were too messy for my room. I tried fleece for a while, which seemed more hassle having to spot clean so often and I found that they seemed to smell more on fleece. I am now using finacard with huggies bedpads underneath, they have had two changes so far and I don't think it smells very much. They seem to be able to last for nearly 5 days on the finacard (with removal of wet areas as and when) as compared to 3 days on fleece. I agree with piggyfan, piggies themselves don't smell (I do only have girls though) just a nice hay smell :)

I'm not sure whereabouts you are but if you let us know we may be able to reccommend a rescue which you could go and visit and judge for yourself (being a rescue friendly forum we'd advocate getting piggies from a reputable rescue in any case).

Personally, I think my boars have a rather pungent aroma about them but they live in my living room next to the sofa and unless it's really warm they can go a week (on finacard) without being unpleasantly smelly. I would say good air circulation is probably helpful though, I tend to have windows open fairly regularly.

I can honestly say that my pigs don't smell at all, i take out all the left over hay on a morning and replace with fresh hay and do a quick tidy up and replace the bedding where they have wee'd and its perfect. I have 3 un-neutered boars and they don't smell any worse than my girls.
