We've had Pratchett, our neutered boar, for a couple of weeks, and I was surprised that in all of his dominance displays he never humped either of the girls. Well, he was being SUAVE. Today, while I was filming the chinchillas in their upgraded playpen, I heard some odd guinea pig noises and yup, they upstaged the chinchillas!

No worries, this is post-coitus and appropriate for all ages to view.

I checked Melody, and she's got the boar glue in/on her bits, so I'm guessing that was successful. I honestly don't know if Pratchett and River will ever mate, but check the video, I think Melody is happy.

Neutered boars exhibit perfectly normal behaviour except from the fact that their semen is no longer containing sperms after a 6 weeks' post-op wait. they will mate with a sow when she is ready at the end of her season, which happens around every two weeks. It is the sows who call the shots in that respect. A season can be as discrete or dramatic depending on how strong it is and how strong the pheromone output during that time.

Any other mating, especially during bonding, is dominance based and depends on whether a sow is submitting to a new boar and his dominance or not - and also how worked up a boar is when he comes into the presence of sows. Submissive boars will not mount much while other boys can quite randy and like to chase their girls around even when they are not in season.

Well, it's the next day, the heat is over, and their behavior has changed just a little bit. Melody is popcorning A LOT. Random, spontaneous popcorns like you get when they're just weeks old. It's really adorable.

Pratchett continues to rumble strut, and I'm getting the impression that's going to be his regular mode. He and River are "talking" today, and she barbered his ear and rear a bit. They might end up mating after all. It's just so fascinating to watch guinea pig social/sexual dynamics!

I don't think Jambo can be arsed - he gets humped by the girls more than he dishes out - unless he's shy and doing it under cover of darkness!:P

:)) :))

Heck yes! I never thought of that! Although I really don't think Colin would be tough enough to try his luck with Hettie!

She is a big woman! :yikes:

Boars have a time after bonding when there whole conversation seems to be reduced to rumbling... A strong season acts as a bonding experience through the shared excess of emotions. Melody is obviously head over heels with Pratchett, and Pratchett is a VERY proud and happy boar indeed! Social grooming and nuzzling is a reaffirmation of a bond and is just what you want to see on the day after a dramatic season.

I divide my neutered "husboars" into the rumble-singers and the mountaineers... :D
