Hi

I am in the process of planning and building a home and run for rescued piggies. I am looking at getting 3 piggies, all under 1yr and wondered what the best mix would be for happy living!

So, 2 boys and a girl? 3 girls? 3 boys? and so on!

Obviously if there is a mix of genders the single boy or girl will be neutered as soon as he/she is old enough. But even with a group of the same gender would neutering be advantages anyway. I have read that this makes them more likely to get along.

Many thanks

David

Definitely not 2 boys & 1 girl as boys, neutered or not, will fight over a sow.

I would either have 3 girls or 1 neutered boy with 2 girls :)

Neutering of male piggies does not affect their behaviour, only their ability to father young, spayed sows in rescue are extremely rare due to it being an extremely invasive op & usually only done when deemed medically necessary, however there is one rescue in rugby that routinely spays/neuters all piggies :)

Excellent. Thanks for that. We may just end up with two anyway. In which case we will get them the same gender. If 3 we will have the male neutered.

I had heard that neutered males were less likely to fight in adulthood. Guess that was incorrect. So thanks for that too :)

Would 3 girls or 3 boys be ok? Or 4 boys or 4 girls for that matter?

This would mean avoiding unnecessary surgery for them if it has no other benefits.

You could have 4 girls living together but if you wanted 4 boys you would have to have them in pairs & even then there are no guarantees they'd not fall out when they hit "the teens." Trios can & do work but are rare but i'd not chance a quartet of boars :)

2 or 3 girls it is then :)

Would it be ok to add a neutered boy to 2 or 3 girls at some point? Seems like it would be.

:))that depends on the girls some bond with each other very well (sows) and dont always take to a new male entering the group but some do.. it really does depend on the guineas ive tried introducing my neutered boy on my profile pic
<<< to my 3 sows and they tried to bite him and teeth show and started to fall out them selfs so i took him out and he now lives happy with 1 sow but could take well to another sow i have coming on saturday then again he may not..its alway worth having an extra hutch handy when introducing a new guinea to another guinea or group of guineas just incase it fails to work out..but if it does work out he will be in heaven:))

Yeah, figured there are no definates with this. Just looking for what is most likely to work out best.

i would get male already(neutered) and 2 sows or male already(neutered) and 1 sow at the same time lots of rescues have males and females aready paired up ready for there new home together so theres no bonding issues for you ..
