When I went to give the piggies breakfast this morning, Thea had a slightly cloudy eye. I think she had only just got haypoke as the eye was just starting to cloud over. I managed to get her an appointment for 1 o'clock this afternoon with Marcin. He managed to pull a piece of hay about 2cms long from her eye, put orange dye in her eye (which showed up an ulcer) and prescribed Chloramphenicol as the ulcer was already quite bad. She needs this 3 times a day as well as a couple of doses of Metacam for 7 days. This will be fun as Thea hates being picked up and will hate eyedrops even more but she may well like the Metacam. Wish me luck!

All the best! Good that you have been able to catch it early and have been seen so promptly.

I would also recommend to get some plain tear gel from your pharmacy if they have it to help with the rehydration/comfort and the healing process (the hydration penetrates deeper into the eye than the antibiotic and will help to speed up the healing process there).

You apply the the gel up to 3 times a day but you need to wait for at least half an hour after the antibiotic to allow that one to be fully absorbed. It can sometimes dry out the eye.
You can use plain tear drops if you can't get gel but they are less lasting in effect so you will have to use them up to 6 times a day.

This recommendation is following the practice/prescription of my own vet who I have discussed what lubrication does and also possible forum recommendations with.

Oh no Thea! I hope it’s gets better soon!

I have some of that already and will be sure to use it. Oh dear I think I'm not going to be popular!

Poor Thea. Remember your slave is just trying to help you.

Allow Thea to stuff herself with some lettuce (as it is not exactly fresh grass time) until she is fully absorbed; that
helps when you creep your hand coming from her back end where you are mostly out of her field of sight. She should be sitting on your thighs facing away from you for that. Feeding piggies don't multi-task!

Or use some whispering to assert your authority while still assuring her that you very much love her, get her head in a firm but not crushing grip and pull down the lower lid to aim your drops into the gap like vets and nurses do. Gel is much easier to apply than aiming drops where there is always quite a bit of spillage.

Poor Thea, hopefully she will get used to being handled and not find it so bad once you've done it a few times. Well done for getting such a quick appointment.

Oh dear. I hope she feels better soon. I’m sure she will understand, even though she may not show it. You’d better hope she doesn’t call a meeting with the other members of the GPU 😳

Get well soon One And Only Thea and try to let your slave administer the drops, they really do work although we hate them, love from Trudy and Hazelnut xx

Healing wheeks Thea, and good luck with the eye drops @Betsy !
I remember the fun we had when Tallulah needed 3 types of eye drops, half an hour apart, twice a day, and we had to put her in laundry basket hippo prison in between and for half an hour afterwards to stop Ollie licking them off- my laundry basket still has the teeth marks...

Good idea. Thea will be in Laundry basket piggy prison too.

Oh no! Hope Thea is ok and the eye heals well. Similar to Bobby, he had a huge piece of hay stuck in his eye; but he did heal very well once on the drops. We are all sending lots of love for the lovely Thea, I'm sure she will be back to normal in no time 💗

Just before I put Thea in Laundry Basket Piggy Prison I managed to pick her up out of the hay tray. I think she was asleep as she usually moves like lightening. She complained quite a bit so I'm very glad I don't speak piggy as I'm sure the air was positively blue!

I was definitely sworn at eye drop time this morning as she was eating lettuce as a distraction. Clearly nobody has told Thea that it's rude to talk with your mouth full!
Hopefully there wasn’t as much of a battle to get her out today. Be good one and only!

She still ran off, the only way I got her out was to grab her quickly as she refused to go in the Snugglesack Express. I have a feeling it's going to be harder as the week goes on. I don't like to grab piggies as it frightens them but needs must. Sometimes it has to be tough love.

My Fudge is a little too clever for his own good. After the first day, he’d go in the far corner of the hutch when I went out to get him 🙄 hopefully the days will rush past and it will all be over soon.

This morning when went to give Thea eyedrops, Lexi was asleep and I must have startled her cos she did a flying leap into the hay tray and did a full body slam on poor Thea who was also having a snooze. Lexi was surprised she'd landed on Thea and unsurprisingly Thea was not best pleased at having her best buddy land on top of her waking her up. Lexi jumped of Thea and before Thea could move, I picked her up and she didn't 'arf scream. Well who can blame her? She was having a nice 40 winks probably dreaming about piles of yummy food when her friend leaps on her and her slave grabs hold of her. Poor thing must have wondered what the hell was happening!
