Over the last two days my husband has built the new cage for the boys. I'm so pleased with it and hope the boys are too. I haven't put them in yet - I want to film them going in to get their reaction for you all :) We've (I use the term loosely as I did very little) built up a platform for it so it overhangs the window sill which means I can store some of their stuff underneath.

So, here it is before the fleece:

and one to compare the size of their current cage:

The bottom floor is just under 9 square feet, and the 'attic' is just over 2 square feet.

Looks fab can't wait to see their reaction, big thumbs up to your OH :(|)

It looks fab! I love it and cant wait to see the boys reaction.

Can i ask how many grids did you use for the stand and does it seem to be very sturdy? As I'm going to make my first c&c this weekend (be me i mean my dad) and would like to build one just like yours as i love the set up. :))

That's really good, I need all the inspiration I can get as my C&C is supposed to be coming tomorrow. Yours looks fab :)

We did 2x4 grids for the stand base and put legs on the two front corners (another 2 grids each) as they aren't supported by the window sill. It is as sturdy as it needs to be for the weight that will be on it :) I wouldn't stand on it! We've used tie wraps to join everything instead of the connectors that came with the grids as they created lumps and bumps :) however it does mean that there isn't as much rigidity. It works for our set up though, and it is fine with the coroplast on top as this evens out the weight. Good luck to your dad :)

OOH very nice! Your pigs will be over the moon at he space they have now.

:)

I'm just thinking about my piggies now and your idea looks very good, By the looks of things, I shall be moving so piggies will need a new cage as there currrent one will just not work, I love your idea but as I have 3 and they currently have 16 square feet I would feel bad reducing it, was thinking of copying you idea but added an additional floor and I would also need doors as they would need to be protected from the dog!

How many grids all in did you us, and how many grids to do you get in a pack? Btw it is lovely I am sure they would love it!

The actual cage has 12 round the outside, 6 for the upstairs, 1 for the ramp (so 19) the stand/base has 12 altogether and we have 1 grid left over. That was using 2 packs so there were 16 in each pack.

16 square feet sounds fantastic! Lucky piggies. I'd love something huge but I probably wouldn't have a husband then :))

Yes they are spoiled, I actually took away 1 grid recently and 16 square feet is the smaller size :). Technically if you build up the way it's still the same size lol!

So 3 packs of grids should do me! I will need to do alot of researching before my cage will commence!

Hmmm, not sure about no husband, but I'd be in the bed, you would be in either the upper or lower deck of the guinea's house :(|)

/Lee (Rachel's husband and provider of guinea pig accommodation) - thought I'd use the laptop while she puts the rabbits to bed.... (sigh).

:)), I'm impressed Lee, you've even managed to work out the forum... you will be truly addicted in no time :).

I do love the cage you did a very good job, and I'm sure the pigs will love it :)!

Hehe, Lee, shall we say, is an IT expert. I'd have been worried if he hadn't been able to work out the forum as he has built them in the past. You weren't to know that though. I'm not sure I'm very happy about sharing MY forum with him though! :))

BTW, this is Rachel back now :)

Thats brilliant! How many boys have you got in there, I'm wanting to make a new cage after Patch's neutered.
I'm really quite jealous of you and your boys!

There will be 2 in there when they eventually move in. Have ordered some snuggle sacks from run-rabbit-runs so as soon as they arrive my boys can move in :) I've been so tempted to just put them in to see what they think but holding back until their beds arrive. Wouldn't want to put them in and then have to put them back in their old cage.

Lol tell me how those snuggle sacks re when they arrive, I've seen them on Ebay at 3.25 and free postage there a bargain if there any good! I'm thinking of getting Patch the cream one with circles, Poppy the Pinky cammo one and Pinky the plain pink one.

Yeah that's how much they are from the site as well. I let my husband pick the colours, I was struggling as they aren't really boys colours, so I think he got 2 tartan and 2 animal print. They look cool don't they :) We maybe should have got some pink ones as Benny is really camp rolleyes:(|)
