Hi all! I've joined this wonderful forum for some advice.

We got our lovely two chaps (Diego and Piglet) about 18 months ago and although Diego has always been small (about half the size of his bro!) he recently started losing weight. He went from 750g to 550g in about 4 days. After a trip to the vet they decided to give him an anesthetic and check out what was going on inside his mouth. It turns out both of his back teeth were growing diagonally over his tongue making it impossible for the poor chap to eat. The vet filed the teeth right down and he came out of the anesthetic brilliantly. We fed him critical care and he started eating pellets and veggies pretty quickly and we hoped that all was well and that he was on the road to recovery.

But after the first week he slowly stopped eating independently and would only eat from the syringe. Sometimes he didn't even want that. We carried on syringe feeding for another couple of weeks but he stopped putting on weight and he just wasn't himself... no wheeking, no playing with his brother, no exploring. He sat in his little castle and just didn't come out. We took him back to the vets and they put him under again and have found that his back teeth have already grown back. They again filed them down but now he is refusing to eat independently at all. I can't say that his quality of life has been good this past month. The syringe feeding oftentimes feels forced and we feel like brutes. The vet said he also has a weak jaw now which is making it harder for him to eat and is affecting the growth of his other teeth which she had to file during the last op.

He is a young pig and the most gentle and goofy little guy. We would love to give him a chance. But with such a quick regrowth of the back teeth what are the chances that this time he will have longer before they regrow? Does anyone here have experience with this? Is it possible to have the back teeth completely removed?

Sorry for the epic long post. All advice is greatly appreciated

I am very sorry 😞 My late Enoch had the same problem and the vet said his teeth would keep growing over his tongue. He didn’t recover well and his quality of life looked poor as he absolutely hated being syringe fed so we made the sad decision to send him over the rainbow bridge.

Is there anyway you can get to Northampton? Simon and Kim Maddock at the cat and Rabbit care clinic are the Countries best dental vets and they do conscious dentals. A member on here called @Bill & Ted took her dental pig to Northampton every 6 weeks from Cornwall so he could have a conscious dental. Sadly, this wasn’t practical for us for Enoch for various reasons but in hind sight I have always regretted the decision to have him pts when I did 😞 He was only 3 so the vet said his dental problem was probably genetic. I’m sorry I don’t have better news x

@furryfriends (TEAS) offers temporary boarding for guinea pigs who need to see Kim or Simon for treatment
I would definely taking your boy to see either of them, they are amazing vets and can do conscious dentals so no nasty GA either, it usually takes about 10 minutes to file down any spurs or bridging.

In the meantime you must carry in with syringe feeding you are saving his life, have a look at our guide, it’s really helpful

Thanks so much for your advice, and Claire I'm so sorry you had to make that decision. I'm certain you just wanted the absolute best thing for your piggy. It is just heartbreaking seeing them take no joy out of life.

I have seen the names Kim and Simon Maddock pop up in a few places! We are Surrey based but could rustle up transport if it meant saving Diego's life. Do they do conscious filing of the back teeth as well as the front ones?

Thanks again for both your input. Keep your fingers crossed!

Yes, my boy Ted had a spur on a back molar which grew into his cheek, he had regular dentals with Simon. They really are the go to vets for anything dental, I cannot recommend them enough. They will do a proper assessment and do any work there and then. It costs less than GA dentals too as you are not paying for your pet being under anaesthetic. Unlike most vets they actually get them eating again which is the most important thing. I would give them a call because they may be on holiday soon and they are a married couple so do take soon time off together over the Christmas period. You can get emergency appts on the day but need to ring at 8.00 am, I would speak to them first and see what they say and register etc

Definitely get an appointment with Simon or Kim. They’ve saved the lives of so many piggies with dental issues. I run a sanctuary for guinea pigs with extra needs, primarily dental and I couldn’t do what I do, without the amazing skill of Simon and Kim.

I wish I’d have known you at the time as I really do regret not surrendering my Enoch to you when he had his Bridge teeth as getting him to Simon every 3-4 weeks just wasn’t doable 😞 But what’s done is done and I have to live with that regret every single day.

Although he didn’t make it in the end, I’m so glad that Edward had a chance and I can’t thank Simon and Kim enough x

Thanks all. This is the first time I've felt hope in a while. His teeth were de-burred 2 days ago, but when it next happens (presumably in another 3/4 weeks if last time is a standard) we will take him. 🤞
Get him registered now and book an appointment. They get booked up weeks in advance, although there are a selection of emergency slots released every day at 8’am. Once he’s registered you can always get an on the day appointment, if needed.

Is he able to eat normally, now that the teeth have been burred? x

Hopefully Simon and Kim can work wonders with your boy. They certainly have with ours in the past!
Best of luck to you and your little man x ❤️

Do get registered now and book an appointment for 3-4 weeks time then you have it if he is eating now. If still struggling try and get an emergency appt, you won’t be disappointed x

They get booked up so fast, we used to always make the next appt while we were there 👍

I can’t add anything to the advice given but want to offer support.
I’m making an assumption that Diego and Piglet’s dad is also a new member today.
Welcome to the forum

The first time he started eating immediately, but this time not at all :(
I’d look at getting him seen by Simon or Kim as soon as possible. Something isn’t quite right and they’ll quickly rectify the problem. No anaesthetic will be needed xx
