Ok so my husband i decided to make an indoor run for our guinea pigs (which we should be picking up this weekend) from materials we already have seen as money is slightly tight at the moment.

So i got to work (my husband is not so handy with tools :(|))

my diy handiness....

First i started with our bookcase, we were brought this years ago and it barely survived the last move.

so i took all the shelves and draws out, removed any pins and screws etc i could see took the back of and hey presto, the walls of a run (with helpers)

I've put the shelves down as a nice hard floor base which will also create a sort of extra waterproof layer just to protect the carpet.

then i knew we needed to make a roof for it otherwise sami (and the cat) would forever be trying to catch the pigs or in sami's case, trying to feed them i dunno random toys.

so round to the inlaws house, scavenged a few pieces of wood and some chicken wire and got to work.

A bit of woodstain and a lot of fiddly stabby wire, blood and a handy camera helper later

all i have left is to create a waterproof layer which i have a sheet of tarpaulin in the shed i can cut up, sort out a litter box type area and make my fleecel liners and we're sorted.

we've also made them a few things for inside, theo helped me make the house from a cardboard box, i've also made them some comfies for inside the run....

of which i'll be making more soon as i have a spare 5 mins!

I'll just add here that we're on the lookout for a table/ unit etc so that we can get the run off the floor AND come pay day i will be buying some heavy duty mesh to replace the chicken wire.

The run itself has quite high sides which will help deter the cat (though i really dont think she'll be an issue) oh and please dont worry, those metal tracks will be removed too just need to find the right sized screw driver!

that looks good. I love your little helpers, send them round to my house I have a toy cupboard that needs a sort out!

awe thats well cool! :) at least you'll be able to pick yours up! :) X

that looks really good. I now want to go to ikea or argos to buy a bookcase so i can make the same thing. :))

I am sure the piggies will be very pleased with their new run that their mum has made by her own hand, and all for not much money at all. Bargain.x>>

Brilliant!

I love it!

Remember to post more Pigtures once the Piggies are investigating their new bookcase.
:)

Snap - that is what I did for my 2 girls Truffles and Noodles - except we dont have a cover on ours as no other pets in the house except fish - they have been in there happily for 2 years - and live in the lounge - our bookcase was a 6ft pine one that was in my sons bedroom with just an xbox on - I didnt have to pay out for correx either as I blagged a load of old estate agents boards as they are made from correx- would recommend this to anyone.

squee! :laluot_03: its all finished, bedding in and waiting - slight issue with the water bottle in that i have NO IDEA how on earth to attach it!

i'm going to have to work that one out i think (as we dont have a driller to drill holes in the bookcase and there are no adjacant ones) so i'm going to have to put down water in a bowl and hope its ok for now till i work it out!

I'm actually going to see if i can go get them tonight, we've already visited and sorted out all the bits and bobs, they are 2 little black boars the rescue lady had just got that day (yesterday) i think she said they were 8 weeks old.

Well done you! Looks fab! I'm now eyeing up my furniture in a completely different light!;)

I make a cradle out of garden wire to hang a water bottle as the tray of my cage in too deep to attach it to the wires. you could put a hook or something on the outside to attach it to? xx

That looks brill, bet the piglets will love it.

Just one thing, dont forget to take the pins out of the cosy!
