Hi,
I know I am from the United States but I love this forum. My 5 and a half old male guinea pig Cookie has testicular cancer in his left testicle and needs surgery. I am waiting on the vet to call me to schedule the operation. I am worried sick and need any and all information about testicular cancer, operations, and or neutering.

My other 5 and half old male Guinea pig Cake has cancer as well and had a tumor removed on his right side. I don't care about the cost. I am just worried about the procedure.

I love my fur babies. They just get odd health problems. I keep telling them they have to live at least until they are 30. Thank you.

I’m so sorry your piggies are poorly. I don’t have any experience of cancer in piggies. But I’m sending you healing vibes. Someone with experience will be along soon. I hope the operation goes well and your boy is soon on the mend. Take care

Hi and welcome!

Testicular cancer is very rare in guinea pigs. We have only seen perhaps a couple of cases over the last decade on here.

I know of a number of older boars that have been successfully neutered at that age and own several sows that have had a much more invasive spaying operation at that age and that have gone on to live another year or two to the upper end of the average healthy life span of 5-7 years.
The oldest piggy I had operated was just short of 7 years when a large sebaceous cyst we'd hope would stay put burst during my operating vet's summer holiday and needed operating. She lived for another half year - in human terms, that would be another 5 years or so. Older piggies just tend to recover a bit more slowly as their metabolism is no longer as fast (even though it is still much faster than in humans. It doesn't work like that exactly but it does help to visualise the potential benefits against the risks. ;)
The crucial part is finding a vet with experience with guinea pigs and small furries.

Here is our comprehensive information on boar neutering and post-op care at home:

All the best! We can unfortunately never choose what our piggies come down with and when/what from they ultimately die; we can only give them a good life while we have them with us, however short or long.

Hello and welcome to the forum
Sorry to hear about both your boys, fingers crossed for them both 🤞

My boar Bill had a mammary tumour removed at 4+ years and absolutely sailed through the operation with no ill effects and lead a healthy life afterwards until he suddenly dead at 5, he was perfectly healthy the night before so think it was unrelated to the cancer. My other boar Ted, they were brothers, was neutered at 5+ years and again sailed through the operation so he could live with a couple of ladies and not be on his own.
As long as your vet has good proven experience then your little man should come through the operation well. Be prepared to step in and syringe feed if he is not eating for himself after the operation, good luck hope it’s all goes well for him x

So sorry for your boy’s cancer.
Holding you in my heart.
Hope all goes well with the surgery.
Please keep us posted.

Glad you enjoy the forum.
Although UK based and led it’s a truly international community of piggy slaves.

I had a boar Teacake who had a testicular tumour - very hard lump. He had an op to remove at about age 5 and recovered well. He went on to have several more months of happy life with Theo and then died of another unrelated condition. As wiebke said it’s about checking the vet experience of piggie surgery but it’s not really tricky surgery compared to other procedures. The vet shud explain the risks tho and answer any queries. Best of luck for year boy

Thank you everyone for the replies! I appreciate it as well as cookie and cake. Much love to all

I am so sorry to hear about your piggies :( I have little advise as I’ve never had a piggy with testicular cancer but I have had piggies who have had cancer. Ena and Erika both had lymphoma and didn’t live long post diagnosis but Emma had a cancerous tumour in her armpit. We chose not to operate as she was nearly 6 at the time but she lived for several months post diagnosis until she died of something unrelated.
Be guided by your vet and good luck x
