What does teeth chattering mean? I mean, I know that Teeth Chattering is generally the sign of an angry piggy but how does it vary?

I have had an incident where my mum mixed up my piggies and put my 2 boars together (who don't normally live together) in their outside run ?/ mallethead :o . Of course, all hell broke loose, teeth chattering and they laid into each other. Luckily I was following behind with a sow in hand so was able to easily separate.

However, my question is not concerning this, the above is just to demonstrate one type of chattering (which is following by a full on fight). My question is this... My new boar and sow were put in together on Saturday after living next to each other for about 6 weeks.

When in the separated C&C next door to each other, they laid together by the bars most of the time and not an angry word was said by either of them (not to each other anyway, there was tension with my other sow boar pair next door until I put up a correx barrier between the 2 couples to stop them seeing each other). On Saturday and Sunday they got on great, were laying together and following each other round. They were eating and sleeping together. On Monday the teeth chattering started. It is Archie teeth chattering at Belle. There have been no fights at all and no agressive behaviour apart from the chattering. Belle sometimes chases Archie around the cage, sometime away from food or a bed that she wants but sometimes for no reason at all. She sometimes popcorns whilst doing this do. ?/

I wonder if she is wanting to play and Archie doesn't want to? Is this a possibility or am I letting my imagination run away with myself :))

Or could this be them sorting out pecking order? In which case who is winning?! In the first day or two there was alot of humping (Archie humping Belle), mostly her head for some reason rolleyes:)) and Belle humping him back once or twice.

They are still sleeping and eating together between these events but the chattering events do happen quite frequently.

Help?

Are you absolutely sure that Belle is female?

sows do teeth chatter to sometimes

It could be that they might have had a falling out, as you cant be 100% what they get up to at night, or it could be that he could smell/hear the other boar, as from what I can gather they are side by side with a solid devider between the 2 pairs? so even though he cannot see him, he can still sense he is there and it could be more aimed to him rather than Belle

I had a failed bonding this spring when Llewelyn wouldn't have her on sight. He was chattering at the highest level with his hair standing completely on end. I never got as far as putting them together, as the lady in question gave him back in kind...

Nevertheless, he's very happily looking after his new two girls which I have introduced since and which he took to immediately.

But I have never seen a female humping a male - that's why I asked. If she's female, the must have had a serious falling out, and I'm not so sure whether the two will work out...

i have had two sows who have fought but never a sow and boar.

my sows fought after Cinnamon broke into Maisie's run and tried to steal her babies...quite frankly i dont blaim Maisie for getting a bit aggressive!

Hi, they are currently snuggled in a bed together x) That is what confuses me really. They go from serious "get a room" type snuggling to chattering and back again real quick.

Yes Belle is deffinately a Sow (and Archie is deffinately a Boar).

Belle only humped Archie once or twice and there's been no humping at all for over 24 hours (that I have seen). The teeth chattering hasn't been exagerated at all, quite laid back chattering if that makes sense? And the chattering is not accompanied by raised hair or any aggressive actions.

There has been once chatter from Archie this evening and nothing else.

I did wonder whether Archie is reacting to Lenny next door. (Yes Kirstycc, the 2 pairs live side by side separated by grids covered by correx )

My piggy teeth chatters all the time, like for example, I had her on my lap yesterday and was singing her a little song, and she began teeth chattering lol maybe she didn't like my singing :) But my point is, maybe they chatter to communicate with us, or try to tell us something they're feeling.

I would think that the next door neighbours are probably the reason for this unusual behaviour! I have noticed that my Llewelyn went on chattering at Dizzy (and really upsetting her in the process!) when he was chattering at another aparty.

It seems that they are really happy together as pair, with cuddling up so closely (love that pic!), just a bit stressed by their neighbours... As the two boars used to be pals (if I remember correcty?) they will be still very aware of each other and the "this girl's mine - you're a rival" instinct will be stronger than perhaps between strangers.

I would see whether you can toughen it out and they will learn to ignore the others in the next couple of weeks, or whether that behaviour is continuing, and you will have think whether you can move the two couples apart physically. As long as there is no blood and scratches it's worth a try!

Hopefully, things will settle down eventually, as your boy gets more secure in his new relationship.

Best luck
Wiebke

thanks everyone.

Vickyt - no the boars have never lived together but before I put the correx on the grids between them . I do think it is possibly the neighbours. I'm hoping they will get over it and ignore each other.

This pair as so bonded already after just 5 days. It is love for sure! They cuddle up all the time and it is so sweet to see. That photo is adorable isn't it.

I absolutely love it! Some pigs are curler-uppers, you can feel blessed. They look very bonded to me; cross gender bondings are perhaps the most stable relationship. They shuld settle down well; the first two weeks are usually the hardest while they sort out through the fine print...

Thank you Vickyt...

They are so incredibly bonded. I do feel lucky. My other pair get on great but more or less lead seperate lives in the same cage if that makes sense so this is really lovely to see.
