Hi all!

One of my boys has started a strange behaviour, he'll open his mouth wide and make exaggerated chewing motions. It's like chattering but to the extreme. I have no idea if he's just become even more of a weirdo or if there may be a dental issue behind this. It's been ongoing for over a week now and shows no sign of stopping. There's no reason behind it that I can see either, he'll do it at random points, frequently throughout the day, after he's eaten things and even while dozing. Other than this he's his usual self, eating hay, veg and pellets as normal, begging for food at all hours and just an active wee piggy. He's also the same weight as usual, 1.1kg.

I've got a vet appointment this afternoon since I'm slightly concerned and always prefer to err on the side of caution but was just wondering if anyone has seen this before?

Here he is, looking dapper as always, showing off whatever this is.
Kino Chattering - fingers crossed this works!

Hi

That rather looks like something could be stuck between the teeth at the back of his mouth? All the best at the vets.

Went to the vet and he had a thorough check over (with much rumbling afterward). She could see absolutely nothing wrong with him. His teeth all looked fine from what she could see (and he was impressively cooperative). He's still eating fine, with no weight loss or anything unusual but the behaviour persists. We're to go back if anything else changes and they might have to do a more thorough examination with him unconscious, but at the minute as it's not bothering him in the slightest, we can just keep an eye on it. She did say horses do a similar thing (to do with hormones and having females around) but she's never seen such behaviour in a guinea pig. So I guess he's just my weird little baby!

No horsey behaviour in guinea pigs.

Mouth movement like this is usually due to something stuck somewhere although it has in some cases taken an x-ray to find. At least it is not impacting on his food intake and chewing. I would however recommend that you keep a closer eye on his weight to be on the safe side.
