Hi
I wonder if anyone can give us some advice we have two sows Spikey and Gizmo approx one and a half years old the have been with us since they were about two months old and lived together happily until yesterday.

Spikey is more dominant and yesterday started teeth chattering, her hair all stood on end and chasing Gizmo and bottom waggling! We're used to the bottom waggling and mounting but this is alot worse:0.

We have a c&c cage so kept them separte but next to each other last night, have reopened the cage this morning and its all started again.

They are both on Baytril in their water athe moment as Spikey has a suspected UTI is this a possible cause of the problem?

Any help and advice would be appreciated as we don't really want to separate them permanently.

Many thanks in advance :)

First of all, I must say that "Baytril in water" is not supposed to be so effective, I have heard several times (also by my vet, since Ben has to have Baytril as well at the moment) that you should give them Baytril directly into their mouth, to make sure they got the right dose.

The teeth chattering - maybe it is some kind of sexual game they are playing (also with the buttom wagging?) Before, they might have been too small and so lived happily and now they find out about their sexualities and want to get straight who is dominant? When Ben and Pauline first met, they behaved exactly like this, but after about 1 week, they behaved normal and now live together like an old couple.
Apart from that, teeth chattering obviously means a high stage of excitement.

Thanks for the advice Rachel

We stopped the baytril yesterday as the infection seems to have cleared up. Thankfully the bottom waggling and chattering seem to have stopped you were right sexual excitement!rolleyes

Spikey is still chasing Gizmo but not as much perhaps the baytril has changed her scent?, so hopefully as the baytril is out of their systems it will all get back to normal. They are still sleeping apart but having play and cuddle time together:).

Thanks agin for your help :rose.

I sometimes have this problem with my 2 sows. They also have 'disagreements'. Its kind of funny when this happens because they will stay away from each other and stay at different ends of the hutch. Its really cute when they make up though ^)

Ah good to hear that everything is sorted out; being horny is really nothing to worry about ") Yes, maybe the scent was different.

Many greetings from down "South..."
Rachel

Thanks for the advice guys :)

The girls are still sleeping separately but "talking" to each other through the divide, its quite cute really.

Gizmo seems really scared of Spikey though and runs away whenever she comes near whether she is being chased or not. We're planning to spend the weekend with them together as we're both at home to keep an eye on the situation.

I hope they make up like your sows do Claire can't stand the tought of having to keep them apart permanently, normally they whimper and cry for each other when they're not together! :{

we have this problem with our girls - mum lives with 3 daughters and they argue now and again and sometimes you can hear the teeth chattering - girls hey :)

I wish my vet had told me this when my last guinea pig got a breathing problem - he told us to put it in the water and never said that you could give it them directly in their mouths - the piggy died.:(

Oh Nemo, this is terrible! :0 Many vets don't know enough about gps!

When my Ben had his operation on an abcess 3 weeks ago, the vet again hastened to the fact that the Baytril (0,5 ml) should be given directly into his mouth. This is the only way to make sure he has gotten enough and he swallows it. I fill the Baytril into a needleless syringe and so it is no problem to get the dose right and get it into Ben :)
