Hi. I know this has sort of been covered on this board but I'm new and thought I'd ask anyhow. We got our 2 guineas on Saturday (my daughter has named them Belle and Jasmine). I'm wondering when we should start trying to tame them? Jasmine will come out of the hiding place they have but runs as soon as we go near the room where they are and Belle hasn't really come out at all. I know it's very early days but I don't want to leave it too long in case they then don't want to be picked up. I'm half wondering whether to wait until they're brave enough to actually come out of their hiding place with us in the room and then gradually get closer, putting our handss in the cage with treats and continuing on like this or do we just pick them up? I hate to do that as I don't want to stress them. Any tips would be massively appreciated.

Hi there and a big welcome to the forum from us in OZ :)
awwwwwwww welcome to piggie world you're going to love it :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
OK everytime you go near their cage/house you talk to them get them used to your voices O0 be ready with some nice little treats as well so they can then realise that you're the nice person who feeds them :) :) :)
Another thing give them play time on the floor but have it as a small area with hideys for the first few times so they don't freak and make sure again you have treats for them, keep talking quietly to them they'll soon realise this is a lovely play time and a snack time too :) :) :) :) :)
When picking them up (btw loooooooove their names :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:) put a small towel or hand towel in the cage to pop them onto and then lift them out this way they'll feel safe all snuggled up :smitten: stroke them on their noses and their heads, not their butts they don't like that you'll get a cross brrrrr from them ;D ;D ;D
Go and have a search in here and read up on their behaviour and their food likes and dislikes this will help you too O0
Good luck and most of all enjoy your precious little bundles Belle and Jasmine :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
Get your daughter to help you with all these things so they learn that she also is a 'nice' person and a person they can relate too :smitten: if she's young supervise O0

Your daughter's loves Princess's I take it going by the names of your piggies,my daughter has just lost her Snow white,do as Glynis has said and you should be fine,Snow white loves cuddles from the girls, our older piggy would tolerate cuddles but Snow white loved all the fuss, when I first started picking the piggies up I used to have a grape to offer the piggies, they love grapes and I found they were so busy eating the grape they didn't worry about being cuddled

Thanks guys for the advice. I have been doing a bit of reading and was going to pick them up with treats. i'm not quite sure whether i missed the point but do you advise starting to pick them up now or waiting till they will stay out of their hiding places with us in the room. my daughter is so anxious for a cuddle and yes she's only 4 so patience is limited at this stage. As for helping me...yes she does. i have made it her little job to help me give them food+water every day. She does indeed love Princesses and it was either Belle and Jasmine or Stefanie and Trixy. I think she's made a good choice. haha.

I myself am blind and therefore it is extremely important that we be able to handle them so I don't want to get this wrong. If anyone has any more tips I'd be glad to hear them.

Thanks again. Looking forward to a happy time with our new piggies and making new forum friends.
