I'm sorely tempted to get some, but how much cleaning do they need? Reading in the guides the suggestion is that "wooden toys" are replaced every few months - do beds like this fit into the category of "toys that need replacing" or are they "furniture that can be cleaned"? They look extraordinarily cute, but I'm a bit confused.

I'm following this thread too! They are a little pricey and wonder if my boys would chew them

My seven do chew them a bit but they lie under them so much that it is well worth having them. Sixteen pounds each but oh the cuteness!

It is untreated wood so may last longer if treated with cuprinol garden shades or similar.

Cleaned out and ready for inspection (took grids off the front of the cage for easy cleaning)

Rosie goes on top esp when there is grass!

I enjoyed making cushions for them!

you won't need any care with wooden furniture! They can chew it but won't be able to destroy a bed.
I have never washed the Ikea bed, the breadbox and... I have never washed my cupboard in the last 22 years :))
Long ago I had a piggie who loved nibbling my poor cupboard and the chairs, but these three piggies prefer nibbling the cardboard house.
Give them a simple box and they will prefer that:

:)

I put a noodle mat on top instead of the mattress, and I've never had any wee go through. They chew a little, but not much. All my piggies love them.

My lot only have them at floor time, but they do love them.
And I did varnish them first so I could hose them down if needed, but I haven't actually done that so far.
And as for replacing wooden items every few months :yikes:
Eddi would be horrified - he has been slowly chewing his way through the same wooden house for 2 years, and every time I swap it with another wooden house he sits by the new house looking glum. The minute I put his old house back in he starts chewing it again.
I can honestly say in the 2 years I have had the guinea pigs I have never replaced a single wooden item.

I see a shopping trip coming on...

Can I ask how big your noodle mat is? We picked up one (I think!) in The Range recently, but its a bath mat so quite a lot larger than a doll's bed would be. I'm tempted to cut it down, but worried about bits then fraying.

It is the bath mats I use. I cut them in half, some fray and some don't. If it tends to fray, I just run it through the sewing machine on a zig-zag stitch. They're lovely and soft underfoot for the piggies! Alternatively, I was using them folded over, and just flipping them over when they get a bit grubby.

My girls love their Ikea dolls bed. However, it does cause some antisocial behaviour. Poppy flops underneath it and refuses to share the floor space with anyone. This causes tension as the others like to snooze under there. I put a log arch on top and then Holly goes up and guards it. She occasionally allows Mabel up on top. Poor Sylvia can’t go near it as it’s being guarded from underneath and on top. So we take it out at times to help ease the tension!

And they are SOOOOO right! They simply MUST have one. It's the law! :dri:
Lol - I'm quite keen myself. But maybe not right now. Lots of the roads around here are now being closed due to accidents from the weather and so I'm staying put for the next couple of days.

One of the GPs has a wedge-shaped head and tends to panic and get stuck. So we put guard rails on their Ikea bed, just in case.

But looking at others' pictures I may have over-estimated the danger!

I use thick cardboard as a disposable bed protector.
