Hi

We're in a state of relief but confusion looking to see if anyone has experienced similar
Our one year old boar has been showing all the symptoms of a bladder stone the only thing that didn't make sense was the noise wasn't every time he toileted and it appears to flare up then calm down for a couple days then flare up again bur it really was appearing to be bladder stones

Our exotic vet gave anti inflammatory at first and antibiotics incase of uti. The antibiotics we felt did improve the situation but he was still making the noise
We went back they and us where pretty convinced it was going to be a bladder stone they xrayed him and did a ultrasound
Both clear of anything which were ofc super happy about they prescribed anti inflammatory for three weeks and suggested a change in pellets incase it's too much calcium causing some discomfort if no improvement they want a urine sample.

Has anyone else experienced this it seems a bit of a mystery especially the coming and going almost like something is causing a flare up but a flare up of what I've no idea.
We feed the recommended veg portions and have endless supply of hay the other boar he's with Has no issues
Any ideas?

Sounds like interstitial cystitis. Bladder irritation that's not necessarily a UTI and comes and goes. Glucosamine suppliments help. A few days of meloxicam and feline cystease power capsules opened up and sprinkled on cucumber a few times a day clears it up for my current piggie that has this now and then.

You'll find lots of posts on it here...that's where I learned all this 🐷💖

If all other bladder issues (stones, sludge or a bacterial infection) are ruled out completely then the next thing to consider is sterile interstitial cystitis. It is a non bacterial issue so won’t respond to antibiotics and it can I just be diagnosed through eliminating everything else m.
It affects the coating the bladder and causes flares of pain. It cannot be cured but can be managed with glucosamine to help line the bladder
and painkillers.
Ensuring you only feee one tablespoon of pellets and filter the drinking water is important to keep calcium levels managed, but it is thought changes to the diet rather than the diet itself are behind IC flares.
Something to discuss with your vet and see whether they think it fits.
I hope your piggy is ok

Thank you both! I've been searching Internet and asked on other pages and had no luck so both insights are extremely appreciated.
I feel incredibly sorry for our piggo if this is life long for him 😢 😔 will certainly be something I mention when return in three weeks. She will want a urine sample anyway as procedure do you have any advice on how to get this as I know its going to be incredibly difficult so any tips appreciated

My piggies have only produced samples in the office where they either do a clean catch or through cystocentisis.

Two of my pigs have benefitted from antibiotics (SMZ TMP) even after it was
determined there was no infection. Has an antiinflammatory effect. But that was before we discovered the glucosamine.

Yup some of these poor little piggies have a tough life. So not fair but it is manageable!
