I just rescued 2 piggies from a home where they were not taken care of in November. Their nails were very long so I clipped them. I still noticed a while later that one of their nails (Brownie) were still very long in the back, so I went to clip them again, his nails are brown, and hit his quick. I kept him out until the bleeding quit. My daughter noticed him limping today, and I looked, and didn’t notice anything at first, so I was worried he broke his leg. Then I looked again at his nails, and the one I cut to short is swollen on the toe, not to bad, but obviously it isn’t comfortable. Can I soak his foot in salt water for a couple days, to see if it helps? Or should I go straight to the vet? He still plays, and eats, and is the most sweet boy in the world.

A broken foot would not allow any weight to be placed on it. If your piggy is limping then this is more than likely a sprain.

I’ll let more experienced members comment on treating the toe.

I clipped my boys nail (cappuccino) too close to the quick and he bled. After a fee days he was back to his old self. It will happen, even to experienced people, as the pigs can squirm. This is how mine got his boo-boo.

Good luck and hope your piggy recovers fully 🥳

If he is in discomfort then it would be best to see a vet - he may need painkillers to ease his discomfort.

I actually thought he was limping on the foot with the nail problem, but it is his opposite foot but he’s limping and there’s absolutely nothing I can see that’s wrong it is it swollen or anything. We did get a new guinea pig who is going through puberty and is kind a mean to the other ones, we ended up having to put him in a different cage and everyone seems more happy now. So I’m wondering if he might have done something. Thank you so much for your comment that really helps ease my mind I’ll watch it and take him in if anything else is noticed!

If he is limping on the other leg, then a sprain may be a possibility. Please do have him seen by a vet.

What sex piggies and how many do you have in one cage? I only ask as reading between the lines here, you mention male piggies and ‘others’. If you are trying to put more than two boars together, then you will run into problems as boars can only be kept in pairs. More than two boars together will result in fights and broken bonds.
If you have a young single piggy, then you will need to make some long term plans for company for him
