Hi I posted recently but just wanted to ask for some support ?

Saturday his eye looked like picture one, we took him to the vets and were prescribed Isathal for 7 days. Picture 2 was couple of days ago. Picture 3 is this morning, so its been 4 days so far and from what I can tell it’s getting worse not better?

Going to the vets again in a little while to double check but they’re not a super cavvy savvy vet. I'm super worried it’s an eye abscess as it seems swollen, but not sure if that’s just sore from infection. I don’t know if they would know that though.

His behaviour has gradually got less and less active, day one he was acting fine and happy. Now he’s really sad and uncomfortable, not happy at all.

Argh 😢

Oh gosh poor boy . Yes that does seem to have got worse.

Has he been given any pain medication?
Eyes don’t require a piggy savvy vet - eyes are the same across all species, so any vet should be able to deal with the issue - but it certainly looks like further checks are needed.

Make sure you weigh him daily if he is feeling under the weather and syringe feed if he is losing weight.

I hope he is ok

Ouch. Good job you have another vet appointment. It’s definitely getting worse. I have no experience with eye problems. Sorry. Good luck keep us posted.

Oh no poor little man, that looks very sore :( Definitely agree that another vet trip is needed, and definitely pain relief bless him. Sending lots of love and healing vibes to him, hope it goes well x

Vets checked over again, his eye is no longer responding to light so she thinks it’s an abscess and we will need to remove.

We’ve got some baytril for the time being until we decide what to do. I’m not sure I trust them to perform the surgery required, as they admitted they don’t do Guinea pig surgery often.

Any ideas 😭

You could use the vet locator in the bar at the top of the page and find a guinea pig savvy vet near you.
For surgery it is always worthwhile to travel further to have an experienced vet.

Does he also have some pain relief - that looks really sore poor boy.

Yes he’s got the max dose of dog metacam twice a day. We do have some emergency tramadol leftover from our other piggie too if absolutely necessary.

We’ve booked in to see Ellie the Guinea pig vet in Matlock as she’s our closest specialist.

Can’t believe we’re having to go through all this again, we lost our first pig to a jaw abscess literally a month ago. I just feel so sad 😭

I’ve heard that she is a very good vet so you are doing all you can for a positive outcome. I felt the same recently after Pepper had an abscess and then 🌈 Percy had a stone. Unfortunately it’s just part and parcel of piggy ownership. 🤗

Oh no I’m so sorry @piggydobz, poor little guy. A good vet is definitely a must so brilliant you’ve got him booked in with Ellie Matlock.
I’ve had an elderly piggy with an injury that had to have her eye removed (RB Jess) and also my 8 year old RB chinchilla Pedro, who actually had an eye abscess (retrobulbar) but it sadly burst before it got dealt with, it was very painful for a while and he had a tough recovery after his op and ten months of flushes and dentals, but still a happy boy bless him. Both survived and lived happy lives after their ops (Pedro had a problem with infection coming back and teeth issues so I had to say goodbye but his was a very special case!), and both were done by Simon at Cat and Rabbit Care Clinic at Northampton who is also brilliant.
I’ve also dealt with 2 other abscesses! So sending you massive hugs as I totally know how stressful and worrying it is xx

I’m so sorry to hear this.
While, as I said, eyes are the same across species so simple things can be dealt with by any vet, when it comes to a surgery I would also prefer a good cavy savvy vet.
Sending you huge hugs

So we saw Ellie this morning. She is keen to avoid surgery if possible and try to save his eye.

Got sent home with a course of Zithromax and Metronidazole for the weekend to hopefully shrink the abscess. If we see improvements - great! If we don’t, then it’ll be surgery on Tuesday. Fingers crossed for Howard 🤞

I’m so grateful for all the experience our angel boy Oscar gave us in looking after a poorly abscess piggy 🥺 it’s almost like he’s here and helping us save his brother ❤️

One problem, he doesn’t want to eat anything on his own now. Even though he is capable, as his teeth are ok and he will eat the odd bit of hay. Guessing the meds and pressure of his eye are putting him off. Back to syringe feeding it is ! 🙃

Yes it may be uncomfortable for him which will of course disrupt desire to eat . Have you been given any painkillers for him?

Fingers crossed the antibiotics help and surgery can be avoided

Yes we’ve got metacam. Got some tramadol too, but not sure whether to use it. I’m assuming it’s the baytril that’s upset his tummy.

Panicking a little. We’ve given emeprid, metacam, syringe food and water, massaging his tummy… I know we have to be patience with bloat, but he’s just not getting any more comfortable. Our emergency vets are completely useless for Guinea pigs so don’t want to take him there if we can help it.

Zithromax was amazing with Peppers tooth root abscess but he hardly ate anything while he was on it. Some days we got 100mls of CC into him and he’d still lose weight the next morning 😞. Good luck. Just keep feeding him.

I’m devastated. We’ve had to let him go. He bloated up so fast and we couldn’t do anything to help, he point blank refused anything by syringe not even medication.

Truly heartbroken. This time last month I was pig mom to two boys. And now they are both gone. I can’t believe this.

I am so, so sorry to read this news.
How devastating for you.
Holding you in my heart ♥️
Be gentle with yourself as you grieve

I’m so sorry. You’ve done all you could. Sometimes the call to the bridge is just too strong. Your boys will be popcorning together forever. Take care. ❤️

You tried so hard - no wonder you are devastated.
I also lost a pig to bloat and it's awful.
Thinking of you.

I’m so sorry you have lost Howard, you tried so hard, bloat is horrible, I feel for you x

Sleep tight little man 🌈
