Yesterday I noticed my boar had a little bit of an issue in his male parts. His penis looks swollen and won’t go back in. I googled this and everything is saying to lubricate it . He doesn’t seem uncomfortable and he’s peeing and pooping so I’m not super concerned. But does this happen often? When should I take him to the vet?

Hi

You can try to lubricate it and see whether it goes back in. If not then please have him vet checked. The swelling would need to be addressed but there could also be a semen rod stuck in the penis shaft (which can be difficult to remove and may need more than a pair of hands) or hard dried smegma preventing the retraction.

Boar Care: Bits, Bums & Baths (see chapter 'Bits')

Slowly but surely it is going back in! Giving him bum baths to help and it seems to be working. He’s still his usual self so nothing to worry about but will continue to monitor him and I have been checking my other little wiggly worm. He hates being looked at but I make sure that I am checking. His sticks out just a wee bit so I’m thinking today I’ll try giving him a little bum bath and Vaseline as well.

One of the joys of boars! Mischievous Master Boris is not very good at keeping his gentlepig underbits clean so a supply of ky gel and regular bum baths ....
Fortunately he is very well behaved , for the bum bath anyway....

I just cleaned Wednesdays bum and out on the Vaseline, needless to say he wasn’t very happy with me and neither was Pugsley. I did his because his is out a little and didn’t want it to go out more and get swollen. They are chunkers so it makes sense that they can’t clean it properly

Have you checked whether your boys are actually overweight for their size? You can the BMI by feeling around the ribs.
Overweight is not just life shortening, it can also lead to illness later in life.
Weight - Monitoring and Management (see chapter 3 for feeling for the BMI and the chapter about overweight)

They shouldn’t be, I don’t over feed them. I feed them hay and pellets every morning and evening and they get fresh produce once a day

How many pellets are you giving them? It should be just one tablespoon per pig per day only.

They are under 6 months so they can have unlimited pellets a day….says so right on the directions…this is Oxbow Pellets for young guinea pigs

No never unlimited. Never for any age of piggy . Please do not go by what the packet says - they always say to overfeed pellets. This causes a reduction in hay intake and isn’t good for long term health. It is only ever one tablespoon per pig per day, particularly as you are feeding young piggy pellets which aren’t hay based.

Young piggy pellets aren’t needed. They are a marketing gimmick - piggies can have normal adult pellets from birth. They are alfalfa based not hay based and alfalfa doesn’t have a place in the piggy diet.
By feeding unlimited amounts of alfalfa based pellets they will be getting far too much calcium

I did not know that but still I never give them too much pellets, twice a day and less than a full handful.

Do use an actual tablespoon to measure as it is too easy to overfeed when using your hands.
The less pellets they eat the better!

I use my hand but once again they are not overweight and I only feed them less than a handful twice a day.
