Chocolate (4 1/2) has had a swollen, slightly red eye for two or three weeks. She has been to the vets twice and was seen by different vets both times. One prescribed fusidic acid for an eye infection. When we went back after a week, the cloudiness had gone, but the eye remained a bit swollen. We were told to continue with the drops for another week, but there's still no change. Neither of the vets could see any scratches or ulcers.

The white of the eye is more visible than the other one, but it doesn't seem to bother her and there is no wateriness. It still looks a bit bigger than the other eye.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi!

Have the vets considered the possibility of a retrobulbar abscess (i.e. an abscess behind the eye)? They are not all that uncommon and often push the eye out without any sign of damage (injury or glaucoma) to the eye itself.

If you can, please see Ellie Whitehead in Matlock. Recommended Guinea Pig Vets

Oh dear, perhaps you might ask the vet for an xray and/or a referral to a specialist? Sometimes piggies can get abscesses or tumours behind they eye, hopefully not the case here but if the vet can see no damage to the eye surface and it is bulging, best get some more advanced diagnostics just to make sure x

I should have put the right eye ( first picture) is the one with the problem. Looking at the pictures now, the eyes don't look much different! The difference is only small but is definitely there. Ellie Whitehead isn't far from us but has no appointments for two weeks.

Look up whether you can get to another vet on our recommended vets list.

Just back from seeing Ellie. It was nice to see someone who knew a lot about guinea pigs (and also nice to be allowed into the surgery).
Ellie thinks there could be an abcess behind the eye so Chocolate has anti-inflammatories and antibiotics to try for 10 - 14 days. Hopefully this will resolve it but if not, she will need an x-ray to see what else it could be.

All the best for the medication getting on top of the retrobulbar abscess!
