Every few days, my 7 year old boy keeps getting scabbed up paws. I normally just clean up the dirt from his paws but I have noticed it gets so caked up that it turns into a dry and cracking wound with dirt
The first picture is a VERY swollen front paw. I cleaned up the dirt then it exploded with pus and blood. He currently has a bandaid on his paw because there was big hole in his paw. 😭

Does this happen alot with older pigs? They always have caked up and cracked paws that lead to wounds?

I normally vaccum the cage every two days or so but I do have 3 pigs, so it builds up fast.

Hi, I am not completely sure but I think this is maybe bumblefoot or could be the start of it. I think your best plan of action is to see a vet as soon as possible as this could be a serious condition. @Wiebke, @Piggies&buns would you agree?

In all honesty, both pictures look quite nasty and his foot really does look to be swollen/inflamed and sore. I have tagged 2 staff members on the forum to hopefully give you more advice however, with it being early hours of the morning here in the UK, it may be a few hours before they see this post. Best wishes to you and your piggie.

Please urgently see a vet.
Bumblefoot can be a difficult infection to manage and your piggy needs proper treatment and painkillers.

It is not a common problem and that well cared for piggies who do get bumblefoot have other conditions or mobility issues which contribute.

Please ensure bedding is cleaned and changed daily - it may need to be multiple times a day in the place your piggy is resting most so your piggy is constantly in dry bedding. Sitting in any poops or wet bedding will make the condition worse.

Ensure you increase weight checks (from the routine weekly checks to weighing daily) so you can ensure your piggy is still eating enough hay. Step in with syringe feeding if weight is being lost.

OUCH! That looks really sore and uncomfortable for your piggy. He needs to see a vet for appropriate treatment.
