Hi guys,
Just a bit of advice or ideas of what this could be. I have a boar who was neutered on the 03/09/2021, all went well but had a burst stitch a week later, however this was pretty quick to heal with antibiotics and a new stitch. He did develop two rather large lumps after either side of his penis which I had checked out by the vet a week or so later and she was pretty happy this wasn’t serious and just a reaction to the procedure itself.
I’ve now come home around 1/2 hour ago to a very swollen lump and it looking a little red.
It goes without saying he will be up at the vets first thing tomorrow but has anyone experienced this or have an idea what it could be?
I really hope it’s nothing overly serious like cancer 😞.

I should also note he has just tucked in to his dinner and now Kuching through some fresh hay.
He’s also lost no weight and in fact gained a bit the last week or so.

I think it will be related to the neutering rather than something sinister like cancer. Vets tomorrow is perfect, eating, pooing and weeing all okay in meantime? Any issues then contact vet before hand.

Yup all eating, pooing and weeing is all ok, he seems happy enough in himself so hopefully it’s not feeling too bad. I’ll keep everyone updated when we find out what it is.

It sounds more like swelling or an abscess from the neutering procedure - certainly nothing more sinister (like cancer).
Don't forget to come back and update us - we are here for support whatever the outcome.

Good luck at the vets. I’d be suspicious of a post neutering abscess, but the vets will be able to tell you definitively what it is.

Just an update- he’s at the vets now and they are going to put him under to have a better look and flush out what they can as they do suspect an abscess. Just a waiting game now to see how it’s gone 🤞🏻. Always a nervous wait.

Thanks for the update, your poor little chap, hope they can get it sorted and he’s better soon x

So he’s come round from his op although he’s a bit groggy at the moment, I’m extremely relieved he’s through it. They found the lumps to be relating back to the neutering procedure which turned out to be be cysts/infection (I’m yet to know exactly until I pick him up later). They’ve been cut out and removed and the area flushed out. They’ve also had to cut more of the left over tubes away but worryingly they’ve said that they have no more to cut away if it were to happen again and would need to have a think of what to do! 😧. But overall they have said he had reactions to the stitches that were given previously? They’ve now stitched him using a different technique they use with dogs and cats which should hopefully be better for him.
He’s going to be sad separated from his friend for a little while but they can chat through the bars at least 😅.

Oh poor little fellow. What a good thing you got him back to the vets so quickly. Well done. I also echo the need for pain relief for him. Sounds like you have good vets, so hopefully they’ve given him plenty to take home.
I am tagging @PigglePuggle as she had a problem with a reaction to suturing in her skinny pig Tallulah a while back.

Thank you everyone. I’m definitely happy he’s home but he’s still very off and quiet which is quite a bit different from his previous operation.

I had to have my mum pick him up earlier as I was stuck at work and they’ve given him antibiotics but no pain relief? So I’m a little suprised at this. I might go back tomorrow to ask for some as I generally think he’s feeling it at the moment.
Given him some recovery food to get something in him and some water. He managed a bit of lettuce but he’s not been interested in anything else- even cucumber which is his favourite.
I think I’ll keep up the feed and stay with him this evening.

Do you have any Metacam /loxicom left over from his neutering operation?

Unfortunately not. I did but was told to use the rest when he burst his stitch that time.

Hope The Metacam/Loxicom keeps him pain free, and the little man makes a full recovery x

So glad your little lad has got through both ops so well bless him, hope he’s feeling better and has perked up with his loxicom.
Me and my gang send him lots of hugs and healing vibes, hope he’s all healed soon ❤️ x

A couple of days have passed now and he’s definitely much perkier and eating hay, pellets and veg although I don’t think he’s 100%, he’s not far off. His poos have been normal I size and colour which is a relief compared to before with his neutering OP and he’s gone an unholy amount today compared to his usual. I thought I would give him a weigh this evening and I think he’s dropped quite a bit in the last two days- around 70-80g when he’s quite stable at around 1400 ish.

Any idea how to gain this back a bit or is this pretty normal amount after an operation?

Hi!

He will regain his weight in his own time once he is feeling well again and has fully recovered. Right now you are aiming at stabilising the weight. See your vet if there is suddenly another weight loss and keep weighing daily at the same time for another 2-3 weeks to make sure that the abscess is not coming back. Most boars recover well, so it is more precaution than anything.

Hi, I’m pretty sure a very similar thing has happened with us. Just wondering how costly this procedure was if that’s ok? Thanks

Hi

Please start your own thread by using the large Post Thread button on the right hand side of the section.
This one is 1 1/2 years old and the poster hasn't come back.
Reviving old threads or starting a new enquiry in historic threads is very confusing and can lead to misleading answers for you. For this reason we have a 1 thread for each case rule in this section so you get exactly the tailored support for your own individual situation that we - other than social media - can provide on here.

The cost of a neutering operation can vary enormously from country to country and between vets/post-op care levels but has certainly gone up yet another notch with the recent inflation. You will have to enquire at the clinc you want to use what they charge and what service you'll get in return.

thanks that’s very helpful. He’s already been neutered (3 weeks ago) however seams to be having a reaction to stitches.
