Suzy has a tendency to cough after drinking out of her water bottle. We just started noticing this tendency recently. Maybe the past two months or so. It happens once in a while after she drinks water she coughs a few times and then stops. She does this maybe once or twice a week. She is diagnosed with liver disease which can cause excessive thirst so perhaps she drinks too quickly. But that's just a guess. Just now she coughed a few times but I don't know if she was drinking water or not and then she sneezed a few times. So now I'm worried it's a URI or something. Her eyes and nose are clear so that's good. She is already scheduled for the vet on January 29th (soonest we could get in) for her swollen toe. I think for now we'll just monitor through the weekend and of course take her to an emergency vet if her symptoms worsen. She's just got me worried.

Hi!

If the cough is just drinking related, then it is not an infection but simply due to drinking too quickly/greedily.

Coughing as related to a URI is a secondary and not a primary symptom; i.e. it only appears in a well advanced and developed un- or under-treated URI where other symptoms have manifested before but not as an onset symptom. In this context it would also manifest as a regular cough and not in connection with a specific activity.

Please take a deep breath. Coughing after eating or drinking too quickly is not all that rare. ;)

This is a big relief to hear. Thank you so much for the advice. It's very much appreciated! She has stopped coughing and sneezing so hopefully it was just from drinking. Definitely breathing a sigh of relief. Thank you again!

When you are so stretched and exhausted yourself, every new potential symptom seems like another huge hurdle you don't feel like you can get over. :(

This is very true! Things have just started to settle down in the past few days so my worst fears kicked back up when she started coughing. (Definitely feeling calmer now though). Thank you again for the support. It means so much!

Been there myself... :(
