Hi All- has anyone had experience with surgery on their piggies? Specifically spay surgeries on female piggies? Thoughts on if it is safe or too dangerous?

I have a 6 year old female. She is my baby. This past weekend, I noticed she was spotting blood on her bedding. We immediately got an appt at the vet (thinking it was a urinary track infection). Turns out, she has a tumor in her uterus and a cyst on her ovary. The only treatment to stop the bleeding would be spay surgery.

I am now unsure what to do. If I elect to not do the surgery, we could have weeks (or maybe months left together). If I do the surgery, it would fix the problem and we could have much more time together. But, the risks are real. The vet actually said to me 50% of piggies don’t recover from surgeries.

Insights/experiences would be appreciated. Thank you in advance!

The Ever Beautiful Betsy had to have an emergency spay 8 weeks ago due to ovarian cysts she is just over 4 years old and she has recovered well. It depends on how experienced your vet is. @Wiebke has had older sows spayed.
