I usually get my guinea pig mix in bulk from a shop near my work. I gave the last of the pigs' their mix this morning and so I need something to give them until i'm next in work because it's a 3.5 round trip commute to my work town and i'm off for a few days. I usually give them the shop's own bagged mix which is what looks like little cornflakes, seeds, locust beans, orange bites and green bites and little cuts of alfalfa. I walked around a few towns near my house today to find something that resembled their mix and bought home a shops own mix which was titled 'guinea pig mix'. It looks like theirs minus the locust beans and alfalfa, but it does have sunflower seeds in! It looks more parrotty that piggy! I heard sunflower seeds are poisonous to pigs :{ Can someone help me out pleeeeaaase? Thanks :))

i don't know much on this subject but I have read that seeds generally are not good for them, choking hazard etc.

Thanks. Might just have to journey into my work town tomorrow then and give them a fruit salad for supper and breakfast. All the pet shops had gerty guinea but they don't like that...fussy little !

Seeds are generally not good - they are fatty and the husks can get stuck in the mouth if you are unlucky.

By all means, give them the mix. Perhaps you can pick out the sunflower seed?

They're not poisonous, I'm sure. The GP food I use has sunflower seeds in it (Versele Laga Cavia Crispy) . . . too many of them could make your pets fat though.

So I would just use the mix, or pick out the sunflower seeds if you're worried about choking or anything. Or you could use the Gerty, but make sure they have their normal hay and veggies too. If they get hungry enough they'll eat the Gerty, and if not, then no harm done :)

Many thanks for your replies. I can't be getting them fat. George is already a bit flabby round his tum but i'll use it until tomorrow then go and get their favourite. As soon as I gave them their supper tonight, George went straight for the sunflower seeds. Tut tut tut. Going to be going to piggy weight watchers with him, i'm sure of it!

There not poison to them but if they are shelled they are a choking hazard! Try pixkin them out? My pigs get them the odd time and I never have issues but keep a eye on them expecaly if there not use to them!
