So Rosie had another flare up of cystitis and went to the vets today. After an X-ray to confirm there was no stones she’s had a urine sample tested and sent away for cultivation. In the mean time, she’s been given metacam for the pain and Sulfatrim for have 0.4ml twice a day for 14 days.

I’ve never used sulfatrim before and just wondered if anybody had any experience with it? Is there anything I should be partically worried about whilst using it?

Mine have had it and it’s never upset their tummies. They’ve also never objected to the taste so I guess it tastes ok.

My Iggy recently had sulfatrim for his cystitis and it cleared it up very quickly it was fab. Far less of a battle to get it down his gob than the baytril was and far more effective!

Hope Rosie recovers soon :)

Sulfatrim is adult-strength unflavoured septrin, which is now sold under this brand name as an antibiotic for exotics vets. The correct dosage is half of that of pediatric septrin you are used to. If you can, please give 0.2 ml twice daily instead of 0.4 ml once daily.

@Wiebke the vet has prescribed 0.4ml twice a day if you re-read @Cuddles With Cavies original post

How heavy is the piggy? For a standard piggy, this is a very high dose as sulfatrim is stronger than pediatric (banana flavoured) septrin. The standard dose of sulfatrim is about 0.5 ml for a kilo piggy in a day.

i have advised her to check the doses range with the vet as yes it is stronger than septrin

OK, then the 0.8 ml (or twice 0.4 ml) does apply. When asking whether a medication/dosage is right, please always include the weight of your piggy. Our default is the dosage for a 1 kg piggy.

Okey. Ive continued with 0.4ml twice daily.

I would just like to say though that perhaps maybe it’s not a great idea to start quoting whether people’s dosage is right or wrong if you don’t have all the information. I was never asking or quibbling about the medicine dosage hence the reason the sows weight wasn’t included as I didn’t feel it was particularly relevant. I was simply asking for people’s experiences with this drug as I’d never used it before, was it effective, was it not? Was it prone to causing upset stomachs etc...

But the content of your original post left me feeling confused and unsure of what dosage to administer. I’m not saying it’s your fault - I should trust the word of my vet over and above the internet. But perhaps to avoid this in future only give out dosage advice once you have all the relevant information. Thanks for your help.

Hadley was on sulfatrim for a respiratory infection last year. She tolerated it fine (unlike Baytril, which makes her crazy and bugs her stomach!) Hope your piggie feels better soon!

I am sorry if my post has confused you. We have had several posts since the introduction of sulfatrim from members that are confused about the lower dosages compared to septrin or bayril. As your prescribed dosage incidentally happened to be in the normal range of an average dose of baytril/septrin, I assumed that this was the case here, too.

It’s okey no worries. Everything is sorted out now which is what matters.

I've used Sulfatrim quite a few times @Cuddles With Cavies without any issue. But, if you're ever uncertain it never harms to give them a course of probiotic too. I always have a tub of the Pro-C from Pets at Home just in case,

Yeah I’ve just started today to give a pinch of probiotic in 1ml of water (with a sprinkle of Critical care thrown in for taste) half an hour after the antibiotics just in case. I’ll be glad when this course of medicines is over it stress me out way to much :mal:

I’ve just had an interesting development with the vets and Rosie. They think it’ll be a good idea for her to have some Baytril along side the Sulfatrim but only for a week. I went and picked it up today and they have prescribed 1ml to have once a day, so effectively 0.5ml twice a day. It just sounds like a huge amount of antibiotics to me, especially considering she’s already on the sulfatrim. @Wiebke does this about right?

Just to add that I have rung the vets back and asked if it is the correct dose they meant and they did say it was the correct dose. I’m just worrying because it seems like such a lot!

That is a correct dose for her weight (a 1 kg piggy gets a 0.8 ml or better 2 x 0.4 ml in a day). You can give 0.5 ml twice daily.

Any urinary tract infections require that you go to the top of the possible range. The two antibiotics work in a different way, so they do not add up.

If this doesn't work, your vets and you can either consider a lab test to find out which antibiotic may work best on any bacteria in the urine (if there enough to constitute an infection) or research into interstitial cystitis (IC) which does not respond to antibiotic treatment but has become much more common over the past decade. Cystitis is generally an inflammation of the bladder walls.
Have you done a scan of the bladder yet to exclude a stone or sludge in the bladder?

Okey dokey. And she’s not had a scan yet but she’s had an X-ray and the vet said there was no sign or any stones but an ultrasound would be what look at next to look at the bladder lining more closely.

Hi I just wondered what the outcome was please? I’ve got a guinea with suspected interstitial cystitis who hasn’t responded to antibiotics other than to stop bleeding whilst on them, then it returns. I’ve been given a further medication to try now.
thank you.

Hi

Please start your own thread if you have any questions. Many posters in this section stop visiting the forum once they have got the answers they were looking for or their case has resolved itself. We would be grateful if you didn't revive old threads as it can cause quite a bit of confusion.

My Piggy just went yesterday to Lance a abcess she isnt very Heavy 1,085 grams and the Vet ordered. 52 of SULFATRIM PER LM for her twice a day for 7 days? It seems too much to me.

Hi

Please start your own thread in our Health/Illness section by clicking on the large Post Thread button for your personalised support. This thread is 4 years old. Posting on/reviving old threads for your own questions will only lead to confusion and misunderstandings as posters won't look at the dates and not necessarily your own question, either, which is is why we have the rule of 1 thread per case in this section.
