I first want to start this by saying that this all occurred in 2018. I’m posting this thread in hopes for ANY kind of answer/explanation regarding the sudden death of my two guinea pigs.

To start, my first guinea pig, Humphrey, was estimated to be born in September of 2017, and he passed away in January of 2018. The day of his passing, he began acting very lethargic around 5-6pm, and this lasted for an hour or two until he began seizing around 8pm. The seizure lasted about 45 minutes (he would briefly stop shaking in between for a minute or two) before he passed away around 9pm. He was only about 4 months old, he ate well, drank well, and was acting like himself up until the evening of his seizure. We did purchase him from the pet store (I say that because my other pig—who also passed under similar circumstances—was also from a pet store) and if this is any help, he was a white crested guinea pig. I will add that Humphrey apparently had a biological brother (Walter) who we also adopted, and was Humphrey’s cagemate at the time of his passing. Walter went on to live until he was about 3 years old, where we then put him to rest because we were unable to afford the surgery he needed to survive.

Moving on to in March of 2018, my sweet boy Felix suddenly passed away after having a seizure late at night. He was only 2 months old, and was also a white crested Guinea pig. The day before his seizure, he was acting quite normal and spunky, as he usually was. The only difference between him and Humphrey’s death, is that he was not showing any signs of lethargy prior to his seizure. Felix’s seizure lasted for about a half hour, until we felt his heart stop at about 2am.

My main question is, does anyone know what might have caused their seizures that led to their passing? Has anyone else experienced something similar?

I apologize in advance if this is considered irrelevant to the site, considering it happened 3 years ago.

Pet store piggies are known for having a variety of health problems due to mass and inbreeding, they don't breed for good health, they just breed as many as they can to meet demand sadly. They aren't always well cared for either, so genetic and environmental problems are common.

I don't have any experience with your situation in particular though but I'm sure others can shed some light.

I'm sorry you lost them, so young too, rest in peace sweet babies and hugs to you ❤

I am sorry for your losses.

I’m afraid it’s not possible for us to know what could have caused it. Sadly sudden deaths occur and as piggies can hide illnesses, anything leading up to it that was not yet showing symptoms could also have contributed. The only way to have found out would have been to have a post mortem at the time but they aren’t cheap and don’t always provide answers.

Hi!

I am very sorry for your losses. A sudden unexpected always leaves you shaken and with lots of questions. :(

Unfortunately, only a post mortem at the vet's could have given you the answer if there was a physical trace. We cannot tell you what exactly went wrong.

If all your piggies were from the same shop and died young, however, then it is highly likely that the early deaths were caused by an inherited genetic fault from both seemingly healthy parents with one healthy and one faulty gene in a breeding group. After a few generations of this, an increasing number of babies will inherit the faulty gene from both parents without having a healthy gene covering for it. It is certainly not due to you doing something wrong if that is the point you are worrying about.

Please seek help via a pet bereavement or a mental health platform in your country if you are struggling with the deaths as part of mental health issues. The pandemic has unfortunately made it all much worse; mental health issues are unfortunately not just settling down as quickly as they have intensified. You can find pet bereavement supprt links in the last chapter of our grieving guide link in the post above.
