Yesterday I woke up and I had lost my Freddie. The night before he ate everything, he was pop Corning, his poos were normal. The only thing that had been different is over a month ago he had a cyst appear on his back and the vet gave me antibiotics and checked it and said it’s just a cyst form prodding it. It didn’t hurt him, it didn’t grow anymore in size and he never lost any weight.i woke up in the morning and put his hay in his cage and he didn’t come running out and then when I saw him laying there gone already. I only had him from November 2020, he so so young, I expected to have him for many more years. I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I’m heart broken

Gosh I’m so sorry to learn you’ve lost Freddie. No wonder you are in shock. Freddie was clearly well loved and seemed to have been happy last night. I don’t have any experience of cysts but I just wanted to say you aren’t alone…. We are all here to support you ….take care and pop corn free at rainbow bridge Freddie

Hi and welcome

I am very sorry for your loss. I doubt that it was the cyst in the back that was the problem.
Unfortunately, piggies of all ages can suffer a stroke or heart attack right out of the blue, especially if they live with a genetic time bomb in their body. :(

There is unfortunately not nothing you can do to prevent it or brace for it except to never take a long life for given and to appreciate life with your pets the same way they are living their life - cherishing every day you have with them as a gift from God. You only ever have your pets on a loan that can be cancelled anytime without warning.
Guinea pigs do not have a concept for an average life span; but they have very much a concept for a happy day and consider a good life one with plenty of those. As long as you have given Freddie lots of love and happy days, you have not failed him. The rest is simply out of our control.

Please take your time to read our grieving guide to make sense of your strong and sometimes bewildering or rather unexpected feelings and mood swings in the coming days and weeks; it also contains support resources. I’m so sorry for the sudden loss of Freddie. Such a horrible shock for you. He had a happy life with you and was much loved. Take care. Popcorn high at the bridge Freddie. ❤️

I am so sorry that you lost Freddie so young :( I doubt very much that the cyst is what caused his death. Sadly, guinea pigs can die from heart attacks and strokes at any age. Please be kind to yourself as you grieve x

I'm so sorry for your loss! What an awful shock! I truly don't think that the cyst had anything to do with his passing... unfortunately, sometimes even young guinea pigs can suffer a sudden cardiac event. He may have had an underlying heart issue that had no symptoms until he passed. Many ((HUGS)) to you.

I’m so sorry you lost Freddie, sending hugs. The same thing happened to me a few years back, I woke up and found my Bill had died overnight, he was healthy and well the night before. It’s a horrible shock for you x

Thank you all so so much for your messages. You’ve all helped me so much. I felt as if I failed him thinking I had missed something or I should of went for a different opinion on the cyst but from what you have all said it must of been a heart attack. Thank you all so much again. Who knew small little animals can have such a big impact on our lives!
